The Tourist Attractions of Tortola
Tortola, and the British Virgin Islands in general, have retained quite an elitist attraction for tourists as they can be expensive in comparison to some other Caribbean islands. If you don’t mind the additional cost involved in holidaying on Tortola the fact that the British Virgin Islands are less mainstream than many Caribbean tourism destinations makes them very appealing. Quiet beaches and a smaller number of resorts means visitors can enjoy a more authentic Caribbean experience here!
Although Tortola is the largest island it is still small! Measuring just 3.1 miles (5km) in width, by 12 miles (19km) in length it covers an area of 21.5 square miles (55.7 sq km). This mountainous island was formed as a result of volcanic activity and from its highest point, Mount Sage, you can enjoy wonderful views. Visitors who enjoy keeping active can hike along trails around the mountain and within the Sage Mountain Park which encompasses it. Near the peak you will come across remains of primary rain forest.
As with the rest of the Caribbean, Tortola has many fantastic beaches to enjoy. Cane Garden Bay is usually the most popular of them all, though this does mean you could be competing for space alongside many other tourists too. The white sand is beautiful though plus there are some restaurants and bars lining the beach. Far less accessible, and therefore quieter, is Smugglers Cove at the western tip of Tortola. Those who prefer the party atmosphere will prefer Cane Garden Bay or Apple Bay where partying and surfing are the order of the day!
Tortola is best known as one of the most popular sailing destinations in the world. The good trade winds and of course great weather make this the ideal sailing spot. Many sailors come to Tortola to begin a sailing holiday whether it’s on their own yacht or one which has been chartered. In high season, chartering a yacht can be very expensive but in the low season, when demand is lower the prices are lower, making this a good time to try it.
When Should You Visit Tortola?
With its Caribbean location Tortola enjoys great year round weather and the tropical climate means there is little variation in temperature across the year. With high temperatures year round, Tortola can be visited at any time of the year though avoiding hurricane season is recommended, between June and November.
