Grand Cayman Island is the largest and most popular of the three islands which form the Cayman Islands, situated in the western Caribbean Sea. This island destination is famous for its beaches, diving, and hiking.

As the largest island of the Cayman Islands Grand Cayman is home to the territory’s main international airport Owen Roberts International Airport (airport code: GCM). The airport is just outside George Town, the largest city and capital. Flights to Grand Cayman Island from London are available from many airlines, such as Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic. Most flights to Grand Cayman will have 2 stops, usually in the USA. A flight with Continental for example will come through New York and then North Carolina. Delta sometimes offers direct flights from London to the Grand Caymans.

Grand Cayman Island Tourist Attractions

Beaches

Grand Cayman Island is best known and enjoyed for its lovely beaches, the most famous of which is Seven Mile Beach. This lovely white sand beach is highly regarded as one of the best beaches in the world and makes the perfect destination for holidaymakers who simply want to relax in the warm Caribbean sun and venture into the crystal clear turquoise blue waters every now and then.

As you would expect, some of Grand Cayman Island’s best hotels and resorts are situated right on the beach, yet tourism development isn’t over the top here.

Scuba Diving

Along with the beaches, Grand Cayman Island is also well known for its great diving opportunities. The clear blue waters make this an excellent destination for enjoying the marine life up close and personal. One of the most popular diving experiences is with stingrays. Many tourists dare to venture out to Stingray City where they can snorkel amongst the stingrays and touch them.

George Town

The capital and largest city on Grand Cayman Island is George Town. There is plenty in the way of shopping, entertainment and restaurants here as well as some specific attractions. Museums such as the Cayman Islands National Museum, and the Cayman Maritime Treasure Museum are popular, as are the remains of Fort George, a 1790 fort that was built in order to protect the harbour.

Natural Attractions

In addition to the beaches, waters and marine life, Grand Cayman Island also has several other natural attractions to see. In the centre of the island is the Mastic Trail, a popular hiking trail which takes walkers through old-growth dry forests. Look out for various species of flora and fauns on the trail including Black, and Yellow Mastics, and Blue Iguanas.

Many tourists also visit Hell on Grand Cayman Island! This is an area of black limestone formations where it is believed that a local official stated that ‘this is what hell must look like’, and the name stuck.

When Should You Visit Grand Cayman Island?

Grand Cayman Island has a tropical marine climate that gives it high temperatures, with little variation, throughout the year. There is however a rainy season, and also a high threat of hurricanes which means that Grand Cayman Island is not great for visiting at all times of the year. May to October is the wetter time, and from July to November is hurricane season.
