The Cayman Islands is a British Overseas Territory situated within the western Caribbean Sea, to the south west of Cuba and north-west of Jamaica. Consisting of three islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, the Cayman Islands make for a beautiful holiday destination.

The Cayman Islands has 2 international airports. The main one is the Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM), located near the capital city of George Town. The smaller one is Gerrard-Smith International Airport (CYB), on the western island of Cayman Brac. Several airlines have flights to the Cayman Islands from London landing at the Owen Roberts Airport, including Virgin Atlantic, Continental Airlines and United Airlines. Flights to the Cayman Islands will typically involve two connections, and depending on the airline, both stops will likely be in North America. For example, Continental Airlines stops in New York, and then in Charlotte, North Carolina. The flight with United Airlines arrives in Washington and then stops in Atlanta before heading to the Caymans.

Tourist Attractions of the Cayman Islands

Being a British Overseas Territory the official language on the Cayman Islands is English. The islands were governed as a single colony along with Jamaica from 1670 until 1962 when Jamaica became an independent country within the Commonwealth, and the Cayman Islands became a territory. Tourism is understandably the biggest part of the economy here, attracting over a million tourists every year.

Grand Cayman

The largest of the three islands is Grand Cayman. This island is home to the main international airport and the capital of the Cayman Islands, George Town. Although the other two islands have many of their own attractions and appeal, Grand Cayman remains the most popular of the three.

By far the biggest attraction here is the famous Seven Mile Beach, considered by many to be one of the best beaches in the world. Several of the Cayman Islands’ top hotels and resorts are situated right on the beach and these of course are amongst the most popular on the island. Relaxing on the beautiful white sand of this beach, and others, on Grand Cayman is the main appeal for many visitors, yet there is also excellent diving available here if you prefer to be more active – diving with stingrays is very popular, plus on land there are some excellent opportunities for hiking.

George Town is the capital of the Cayman Islands and a popular city with many restaurants, shopping, entertainment and more to enjoy, or for the quieter side of Grand Cayman, the original capital, Bodden Town, makes a nice contrast.

Cayman Brac

The second of the Cayman Islands is Cayman Brac, located 89 miles (143km) northeast of Grand Cayman. Cayman Brac is famous for its spectacular terrain, making this a popular destination for rock climbing, walking and hiking, as well as for cave exploration. Diving is popular here also, including a sunken Russian frigate for wreck divers.

Little Cayman

The aptly named Little Cayman is the smallest of the three Cayman Islands and is situated 5 miles (8km) west of Cayman Brac. Little Cayman is also a popular scuba diving destination and has several famous dive sites including Bloody Bay and Jackson’s Bight.

When Should You Visit the Cayman Islands?

The Cayman Islands has a wonderfully warm tropical marine climate. The islands remain hot all year round with average high temperatures ranging only between 26 C (79F) to 30 C (86F). There is however a wet and a dry season. The rains come between May and October, and between July and November is the highest risk of hurricanes hitting, so not an advisable time to visit.
