The largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba offers a slightly different Caribbean experience to many other destinations in this part of the world. There are still plenty of great beaches and great weather to enjoy, but Cuba also has the benefit of offering big cities, history and lots of culture too.

The chief airport for flights to Cuba is the Jose Martí International Airport (airport code: HAV) in the capital city, Havana. Flights from the UK to Cuba will be indirect with at least one connection. A variety of airlines offer differing routes for flights to Cuba and you can choose from airlines such as Iberia, Air France, Air Canada, Air Comet, BMI, and Blue Panorama Airlines, who all offer flights to Cuba from the UK with one connection.

Cuba Tourist Attractions

Cuba consists of the main island, the largest in the Caribbean, plus a number of small archipelagos, and is situated off the southern tip of Florida. The main island is obviously the major tourist destination and can be easily divided into three regions – Western, Central, and Eastern, each with something different to offer.

Western Cuba

For many visitors the major attraction in Western Cuba is the capital and largest city, Havana, though there is more to see here than the city. Across the country you will always find a great selection of beaches, and there are often many great places for diving too. Maria la Gorda in Western Cuba is a popular scuba diving destination for example.

Havana has an attractive mix of architectures and attractions to see; from the large Capital Building and Museum of the Revolution, to the huge square, Plaza de la Revolucion. In old Havana, attractions such as the cathedral of San Cristobal are popular, and a visit to a cigar factory is often on many visitors lists too!

Central Cuba

Central Cuba is an attractive region which features some of the country’s best scenery and nature. Destinations such as the Cienaga de Zapata National Park are popular here. This is similar in ways to the Everglades National Park with swampland and is famous for its excellent bird watching opportunities. The park also has a coastline though which features some great beaches and diving. The park is actually situated on the Bay of Pigs which was the site of the US invasion into Cuba in 1961.

Just off the coast of Central Cuba is a chain of tropical islands, called Jardines del Rey. This includes a couple of islands popular for their relaxing atmosphere, all inclusive resorts, and not much else!

Central Cuba also has some wonderful cities to visit too. The historic centre of Cienfuegos for example is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Eastern Cuba

Although attractive still, Eastern Cuba is not as frequented by tourists and does not offer so much in the way of attractions. A couple of interesting cities you might like to visit if in this part of the country include Camaguey, with its beautiful churches, and Cuba’s second city Santiago de Cuba.

When Should You Visit Cuba?

Cuba enjoys a tropical climate typical of the Caribbean region. This means the most popular times for visitors to come are in the dry season, from November to April, when temperatures are warm but not overly so. The rainier, and hotter, season is from May to October though towards the end of this period Cuba can be prone to hurricanes, so September and October in particular are not a good time to visit.
