Dominican Republic Tourist Attractions
The Dominican Republic has a lot to offer tourists, from its attractive scenery, mountains, valleys and rainforests, to its beaches, cities, history and culture, there should be something here for everyone.
Santo Domingo
The capital of the Dominican Republic, and largest city, is Santo Domingo. As this was the site of the first permanent European settlement in the America you can imagine that the city is full of history. Certainly the historic colonial area of the city is a top attraction, named Ciudad Colonial.
Ciudad Colonial (or Colonial Zone in English) was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This district dates back to the 1500’s and includes many prominent landmarks including the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, which is the oldest cathedral in the Americas, completed in 1540. Ozama Castle (or Fortaleza Ozama) is another landmark, built in the 16th century to guard the entrance to Santo Domingo.
Puerto Plata
On the northern coast of the Dominican Republic is the city of Puerto Plata. This is a good destination for a beach holiday with good sandy beaches and a selection of water sports always available to try. For a day trip the Monte Christi National Park is within reach. Here you’ll find a beautiful coastline with untouched beaches, mangrove swamps and lagoons.
Punta Cana
Punta Cana is the name of both a town and an area of coast on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic and another popular tourist destination for a beach holiday. There are resorts here but these aren’t high rise and ugly, development has been tastefully achieved. Beaches, water sports, boat tours, a water park and more are the top attractions here.
Dominican Republic National Parks
The Dominican Republic has over ten national parks spread across the country. In addition to the Monte Christ National Park mentioned above you can visit Jaragua National Park in the south-west, or Cueva de las Maravillas National Park (Cave of Miracles) on the south coast. Perhaps the high mountains of Sierra de Baoruco National Park will attract you, or the caves and orchids of El Choco National Park.
When Should You Visit Dominican Republic?
The tropical climate of the Dominican Republic gives the country hot weather throughout the year, but with a rainy season there is a peak and off peak time to travel here. On the north coast only, the rainy season falls between November and January, which is in stark contrast to the rest of the country, having it between May and November. Between June and November there is often the threat of tropical storms and hurricanes hitting.
