Places in Haiti
Situated on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean is the Republic of Haiti. This French and Creole speaking nation offers visitors Caribbean scenery and history though there are some problems in the country to bear in mind.
Flights to Haiti
Most flights to Haiti will arrive at the Aeroport Toussaint Louverture Airport (PAP) in Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti. There is a smaller airport in the northern city of Cap-Haitian, used for local flights only. There are no direct flights to Haiti from London, but there are options for 1- or 2-stop flights depending on the airline. American Airlines and Delta offer 1-stop, with a connection in New York. United Airlines and Air France both have 2-stop routes, with various connection points (usually in the USA). Flights to Haiti with Air France may also travel through Paris.
Haiti Tourist Attractions
Haiti is one of, if not the, poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Political instability and lawlessness over the past decades made this a dangerous country to visit, and though the situation has improved a fair bit in recent years tourists are still advised to take great care here. Check with the Foreign Office before booking your flight to Haiti so that you are aware of the current situation and take note of any advisories you are given once you arrive in the country.
Port-au-Prince
The capital and largest city of Haiti is Port-au-Prince. Despite political tensions and there being only a few tourist attractions to speak of here this city has managed to continue to attract tourists. There are several cultural attractions as well as some interesting architecture to see here, particularly Victorian era ‘gingerbread houses’. The National Haitian Pentheon Museum is the city’s main museum where you are guided through the exhibits on the history of this country.
Labadee
The main tourist destination in Haiti is Labadee however this is essentially a private resort that’s owned by the cruise ship line Royal Caribbean International who come here on their cruises. If you haven’t arrived by cruise ship you may be allowed entry to his gated community where you can enjoy the beaches and their facilities. There is no accommodation here as passengers would sleep on the cruise ships but there are a couple of fast-food type places to get food. If you haven’t arrived by cruise ship don’t expect to be guaranteed entry to this part of Haiti.
Citadel Henri Christophe
Situated high up on a mountain overlooking the city of Milot is the Citadel Henri Christophe (also known as Citadelle Laferriere). This is the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere and is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, and unsurprisingly it is one of Haiti’s top tourist attractions. The only difficulty is reaching the citadel as it’s not accessible by road all the way so involves an uphill hike.
Another attraction to visit while you’re in this area is the ruins of Sans Souci Palace. This old ruined palace actually sits at the bottom of the mountain on which the citadel stands.
When Should You Visit Haiti?
Haiti has typical Caribbean weather, so the climate is tropical and semi-arid, so quite dry in some parts of the country, whereas some of its valleys are very fertile and green.
