Port-au-Prince is the capital and also the largest city of Haiti, a country in the Caribbean. As the name suggests this is a port city and is situated on a large bay facing the Gulf of Gonave. There is not as much to see here as in some Caribbean capitals, but Port-au-Prince does remain a popular tourist destination.

Most of these connection cities are in the USA, though Air France will go through Paris on some routes.

Port-au-Prince Tourist Attractions

Haiti, including its capital city, has been suffering from political problems and lawlessness for many years; a fact that has made this a somewhat dangerous country to visit. The situation has improved in more recent years, but tourists should still remain vigilant when visiting Port-au-Prince. Even despite these problems Port-au-Prince is quite a popular destination and provided that you take care while visiting you’ll find this is an interesting city.

In the centre of the city there are several points of interest. The National Palace is one – this was originally built in the early days of the city though was later destroyed and then rebuilt in 1918. Close by is the city’s main cathedral, Cathedrale de Port-au-Prince (also known as Cathedrale de Notre-Dame). The white exterior of this building is very striking and complements the neo-romantic architectural style in which it is built.

Aside from these major buildings Port-au-Prince is quite rich in Victorian architecture, particularly those known as gingerbread houses. This form of Victorian architecture features heavily decorated exteriors including ornate designs, towers, and more. There are numerous buildings in this style in Port-au-Prince though one popular place to visit is Hotel Oloffson. This 19th century gingerbread mansion was formerly the home of two presidents but has been used as a hotel since 1935. It has been frequented by famous names like Graham Greene, Sir John Gielgud, Mick Jagger and Jackie Onassis.

There are a couple of museums in Port-au-Prince. The national museum, called the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien is located here and contains historical artefacts from Haiti’s history including an anchor which is said to have been raised from Christopher Columbus’s ship, the Santa Maria.

There is also the art museum, Musée d'Art Haïtien du Collège Saint-Pierre, which makes a good visit if you are interested in seeing the works of some of Haiti’s best artists

When Should You Visit Port-au-Prince?

Port-au-Prince’s tropical climate means this city remains warm to hot throughout the year. Haiti as a whole is semi-arid so it’s drier here than in some Caribbean countries though as with much of the Caribbean the peak visiting time is usually during the winter.
