The Caribbean is the archetypal tropical holiday destination, featuring beautiful white sandy beaches, and turquoise blue waters, ample opportunities for scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing and boating; wonderful scenery to enjoy from a far or to hike in up close; colonial architecture and friendly faces. With such a lot to experience and such a huge choice of destinations to visit, how do you pick your perfect Caribbean holiday destination and where should you catch a flight to? The following guide should help you choose!

Where is the Caribbean?

When we talk of the Caribbean we are thinking of the region that includes the Caribbean Sea and the islands within and surrounding it. There are actually more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays in the Caribbean and these islands are referred to as the West Indies. The groups of islands within the Caribbean include the Antilles, which consists of the Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles, plus the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The latter two are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean, not on the Caribbean Sea but they are still collectively grouped within the Caribbean.

Flights to the Caribbean

Of the 7,000 destinations in the Caribbean obviously only a very small proportion will have airports, and an even smaller proportion will have airports large enough to cope with international flights to the Caribbean as these flights will require larger planes and therefore larger runways. If you want to travel around within the Caribbean sometimes your only option is to go by boat as there are not many flights that go between the different islands.

Greater Antilles

The Greater Antilles consists of popular destinations that include Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) and Puerto Rico.

Being the largest islands in the Caribbean finding a flight to these destinations should be no trouble. Flights to Cuba from the UK are available with airlines such as Iberia, Air France, Air Canada, Air Comet, BMI, and Blue Panorama Airlines, all offering one stop flights.

Jamaica’s two international airports are covered by numerous airlines including Continental, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Delta, Air Canada, and BMI, with one stop flights.

Haiti’s international airport is Aeroport Toussaint Louverture Airport (airport code: PAP) in the capital city, Port-au-Prince. You will again require one or two stops for flights to this Caribbean destination, with American Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, and Air France.

Puerto Rico’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (airport code: SJU) near San Juan is its main entry point. One stop flights can be found with Iberia, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Continental Airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Air France.

Finally the Dominican Republic has several international airports: Santo Domingo (airport code: SDQ), Santiago Municipal (airport code: STI) and Punta Cana International (airport code: PUJ). Airlines offering flights include LTU, Air France, Virgin Atlantic Airways, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, BMI and Continental Airlines.

Lesser Antilles

The Lesser Antilles are the smaller islands of the Caribbean. They consist of the Leeward Islands which includes destinations such as the Virgin Islands (both US and UK), Anguilla, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, and Montserrat. The Windward Islands includes popular destinations like Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenadines, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago. The top destination in the Leeward Antilles is Aruba.

Generally it’s much the same airlines who offer flights to these Caribbean destinations with a few differences here and there. Flights to Aruba for example could include KLM, or to Antigua BWIA West Indies Airways and Condor are amongst the airlines offering flights. Only a few Caribbean destinations can be reached by direct flights from the UK – Antigua is one example, with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
