Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica and it’s situated on the southeast coast of this Caribbean island. Considering the size of Jamaica, Kingston is a considerable city with a population of over 650,000 people. Even so, it remains quite an attractive city and has an interesting and fun range of tourist attractions.

Flights to Kingston

Jamaica has two international airports and even though Kingston is the capital, there are more flights offered from the UK to Montego Bay, Jamaica’s top tourist resort town. However there are still a number of options for flights to Kingston, landing at the Norman Manley International Airport (airport code: KIN). British Airways has flights to Kingston from Gatwick, as does Virgin Atlantic. Indirect flights to Kingston are also available with several other airlines, such as Delta via Atlanta or New York, Air Canada via Toronto, or American Airlines via Miami.

Kingston Tourist Attractions

Port Royal

Kingston was established in 1692 when the nearby notorious town of Port Royal was nearly destroyed following an earthquake and the inhabitants who survived fled to Kingston, formerly an agricultural area. Port Royal was notorious for its pirates and acted as a haven for many who pillaged from ships in the Caribbean. Though most of the town was destroyed some of it still remains and has become a popular tourist destination; other parts have been rebuilt, plus there are plans to develop more of this into additional attractions such as an aquarium. Visit Port Royal today and you’ll find an interesting museum with artefacts that have been pulled out from the harbour, plus some of the buildings.

Museums in Kingston

As well as the museum at Port Royal there are several other museums in Kingston. The National Gallery of Jamaica is here and is home to the country’s major art collection. It includes works from Jamaican artists as well as international ones.

The small Arawak Museum focuses on the Arawak Indians who called Jamaica home before the Europeans arrived, while the People’s Museum of Craft and Technology focuses on later history and the tools and instruments used in Jamaica for farming and crafts.

The Bob Marley Museum is one of the most popular though and it’s housed within the former home of Bob Marley. Guided tours last an hour and you’ll get to see personal belongings, memorabilia and the recording studios.

Devon House

Another museum of sorts is Devon House. This was the home of the first black millionaire in Jamaica and features some great Jamaican architecture as well as furnishings from the 19th century. Visitors get a tour of the house plus you can enjoy a couple of restaurants and shops that are included in the grounds.

Hope Botanical Gardens and Zoo

Named after Richard Hope, the man who helped Britain take control of Jamaica, these botanical gardens are the largest in the Caribbean. Right next door you can also visit the Hope Zoo.

When Should You Visit Kingston?

The tropical climate gives Kingston hot weather throughout the year. Temperatures in fact range only a few degrees between average highs of 30 and 32C (86-90F), and average lows of 19 to 23C (66-73F). Kingston is best avoided however during hurricane season which lasts from summer to autumn. The best, and driest months to visit are from January to April.
