Places in Puerto Rico
Located in the Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic, and west of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means that Spanish and English are the official languages, the US Dollar is used for currency, and Barack Obama is the Presidential Head of State.
Flights to Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico has a total of three international airports, the largest and busiest of which is the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (airport code: SJU) 3 miles from San Juan. Currently this is the only international airport that has flights to Puerto Rico from outside the region. From the UK you can catch a direct flight to Puerto Rico with Virgin Atlantic from London Gatwick – this is the only airline with a direct flight from the UK. Other options include a variety of airlines travelling via the USA, such as US Airways, British Airways, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, or Air France, all offering one stop flights to Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico Tourist Attractions
Puerto Rico is an archipelago that consists of the main island of Puerto Rico and several much smaller islands. Known as ‘The Island of Enchantment’, Puerto Rico has plenty of beautiful scenery, beaches and culture to experience.
San Juan
The capital and largest city of Puerto Rico is San Juan. Situated on the northern coast this city has one of the largest natural harbours in the Caribbean and is a vibrant city with lots to see.
Old San Juan is the historical heart of the city and features some beautiful historic buildings, museums, shops and more, making up part of the San Juan National Historic Site that also includes Fort San Felipe del Morro, built in the 16th century, and Fort San Cristobal built in the 17th century.
Luquillo
Puerto Rico has many beautiful beaches if you’re looking for a relaxing holiday destination. You’ll find many beachside hotels across the islands, but the beach at Luquillo is said to be the best all round public beach. The beach itself is good but what sets this apart is the reef protected swimming area so you can swim safely without the risk of high currents and strong tides. There are also some lovely views of El Yunque National Forest from here.
El Yunque National Forest
Puerto Rico has some beautiful coastlines but the interior shouldn’t be missed too. The El Yunque National Forest is a tropical rainforest with plenty of lush green vegetation, waterfalls, places to hike and more. You can visit the El Portal Rain Forest Center to get a good introduction to the forest and some great treetop views from the centre’s elevated walkway.
Arecibo
Avery different attraction on Puerto Rico is the world’s largest radio telescope. This huge dish-like structure sits in the forest just inland and can be viewed from the Arecibo Observatory where there’s a visitor centre.
Ponce
The second largest city in Puerto Rico is Ponce. Its sights are conveniently bunched together around the city’s main square, Plaza las Delicias and include the striking Parque de Bombas, the city hall, and a couple of museums.
When Should You Visit Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico’s tropical climate keeps the islands warm to hot throughout the year, with little variation in the temperature. The yearly average temperature is in fact a very warm 28C (82.4F). This means you could essentially visit Puerto Rico at any time of the year, however you should really avoid hurricane season, spanning from June to November.
