San Juan Tourist Attractions
While the whole of Puerto Rico is a popular tourist destination San Juan is undoubtedly the premier place for tourists to visit on the island. Founded by the Spanish in 1521 it’s the second oldest European established city in the Americas and still features plenty of its old historical charm. This combined with great beaches, restaurants, shopping, culture and many other attractions make San Juan a great place to visit.
San Juan National Historic Site
One of the top attractions in San Juan to visit is the area established as a National Historic Site, and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The San Juan National Historic Site includes most of the old city wall as well as some impressive colonial-era forts.
Fort San Felipe del Morro is an extensive fort that was built in the 16th century to guard the entrance to San Juan Bay. This is one of the top tourist attractions on Puerto Rico and you can explore the buildings and the ramparts of this huge fort.
The smaller Fort El Canuelo sits opposite Felipe del Morro, helping to protect the bay entrance. This fort is far smaller and was heavily damaged during the Spanish-American War, so only the outside is accessible.
Fort San Cristobal is the other significant fort in San Juan. It was built in the 17th century and is the largest fort built by the Spanish in the New World, originally covering 27 acres and enclosing the old city of San Juan. Since then about a third of the fort has been demolished but it’s still a top tourist attraction.
La Fortaleza
Also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in San Juan is La Fortaleza, meaning The Fortress. This is the current residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico and was originally built between 1533 and 1540, making it the oldest executive mansion in the New World.
Other Attractions in San Juan
Aside from these historical attractions San Juan has many attractive colonial buildings to admire around the city. There are also museums here such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Puerto Rico, and the Puerto Rico Arts Museum. The Bacardi Distillery is a popular attraction, and of course there are many excellent beaches, restaurants and shops to visit in San Juan too.
