Belize City is the largest city, and former capital, of Belize in Central America and is situated on the Caribbean Sea. It is the country’s main transportation hub and has several attractions of interest to visitors.

The country’s main international airport is close to Belize City (about a 30 minute drive by taxi) and is called Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (airport code: BZE). Flights to Belize City from the UK generally involve two connections though Continental Airlines has an occasional one stop flight to Belize from London. Other airlines with two connections include Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, American Airlines, and United Airlines. Routes and connections required vary depending on the airlines.

The Tourist Attractions of Belize City

Belize was formerly called British Honduras and was a British colony. Until 1961 Belize City was the capital of the country, but when the city was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Hattie, the government decided that the capital city should be located in a safer place and so it was moved inland to Belmopan.

Despite the move, Belize City is still the largest city in Belize and when not threatened by hurricanes its position on a peninsula jutting into the Caribbean Sea is very attractive and appealing!

Although Belize City would have previously contained a high number of colonial buildings many of these were unfortunately destroyed by that hurricane in 1961, however, there are still some areas which have interesting older buildings, of which the Fort George area is the most significant.

You will find a great many references to somebody called Baron Bliss as you wander around Belize City. Henry Bliss, better known as Baron Bliss, was a British traveller who died on March 9, 1926 leaving 2 million US Dollars to a trust fund specifically created for the benefit of the citizens of Belize (then called British Honduras). The estate also included Bliss Lighthouse where Bliss is now buried, and you can visit the lighthouse, also known as Baron Bliss Monument, in Fort George. This show of generosity really touched the people of Belize and so the Baron Bliss Day is celebrated each March 9th in his honour!

The Fort George area actually has most of the attractions in Belize City worth seeing. In addition to the lighthouse there is also Memorial Park here, plus the Museum of Belize.

For the best example of colonial architecture in Belize City visit the Government House. It’s claimed that Sir Christopher Wren was the architect of this building which now contains the House of Culture Museum, and it was built in 1821. Although the government no longer meets here this did remain an important venue for functions for visiting VIP’s until it became the museum it is today.

When Should You Visit Belize City?

As you know Belize City can be affected by hurricanes and hence hurricane season would not be a good time to visit. The wet season is from May to November with hurricanes most likely towards the latter part of this period. Belize City has a humid subtropical climate and other than the wet season it’s basically dry! The overall average temperature in January is 24C, though daytime highs will often be hotter than this.
