Costa Rica is renowned for being a very forward thinking Central American country, sandwiched between Nicaragua in the north and Panama in the south, Costa Rica has both a Caribbean Sea coast and a Pacific Ocean coast and is one of the world’s leaders in terms of eco tourism and a goal of becoming carbon neutral.

Flights to Costa Rica from the UK are available with numerous airlines with the benefit of just one stop-over before landing in the capital city San Jose, at the Juan Santamaria Airport (airport code: SJO). Travellers can choose from airlines such as Iberia, Continental Airways, Air France, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. Routes for flights to Costa Rica from the UK vary but most of the airlines fly via their home countries.

The Tourist Attractions of Costa Rica

Tourists who are looking for an eco tourism holiday will find that Costa Rica is leading the way in minimising the environmental impact of tourism, limiting development to eco friendly resorts and encouraging its residents and visitors to be environmentally friendly in what they do. To this end, Costa Rica offers visitors some spectacular scenery, friendly locals, great beaches and great weather!

Caribbean Costa Rica

Despite a coastline on the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica’s Caribbean region is not frequented by tourists because it’s actually quite isolated from the rest of the country and is renowned for having persistent mosquitoes! However, if you do fancy venturing onto this east coast you’ll find some lovely quiet areas and opportunities for turtle spotting!

Beaches on Costa Rica

The best area for fantastic beaches on Costa Rica is the Guanacaste Province in the north west. This is one of the driest spots in Costa Rica where humidity levels are low too, making this popular with many tourists. In addition to the beaches there is said to be world class surfing here and great sport fishing too.

National Parks

When not enjoying the beaches, the Guanacaste Province has some beautiful national parks too and spectacular volcanic scenery. Take a guided tour into the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park for example, to see the volcanoes and wildlife.

Costa Rica also has several other national parks across the country too. In the Caribbean region there is the Cahuita National Park, whilst over in the south of Costa Rica is Chirripo National Park. This one contains the country’s highest peak, Chirripo Mountain. Hiking up the mountain is popular though this part of Costa Rica has much higher humidity than the north.

Cocos Island National Park is quite beautiful. Though as this is an island situated 300 miles off the south west coast of Costa Rica it’s not very accessible and access is restricted. If you’re into diving the best way to see the park is by joining a dive trip.

Manuel Antonio National Park is in the Central Pacific Province and has lots of wildlife to offer visitors including monkeys, iguanas, sloths, toucans, birds and bats, whilst the area around the park is renowned for more great beaches.

Cities in Costa Rica

Of course Costa Rica isn’t only about rainforests and beaches. Cities include the capital and largest, San Jose, the historic and original capital Cartago, and the attractive Dominical.

When Should You Visit Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has a tropical and sub tropical climate though there can be substantial variation from one end of the country to the next. Generally the dry season is from December to April and the rainy season is from May to November, but on the Caribbean coast, December is the wettest month of the year. Temperatures are usually hot all year round, though night times, especially at elevation, can get cool.
