San Jose has always had a variety of attractions on offer and with the rapidly increasing popularity of Costa Rica as a tourism destination, the capital city is benefiting all the time and visitor numbers are increasing.

However, the city was founded in 1738, so it’s still old, and was designated the capital of Costa Rica in 1823. Most of the city is now formed of modern architecture so don’t expect to see much in the way of colonial mansions or other buildings.
