The Tourist Attractions of El Salvador
El Salvador, although small, does have a variety of attractions to offer visitors. With its increasing popularity as a top surfing destination, the water and the beaches are popular destinations, though there are also sites of great interest, such as Mayan ruins, and scenic beauty.
San Salvador
San Salvador is the capital and largest city of El Salvador. The city sits in a valley at the foot of San Salvador volcano. This is a large and bustling city, home to a third of the population of the whole of El Salvador. Many of the old colonial buildings have been destroyed by earthquakes over the years, but the city is still very attractive in many ways. San Salvador is quite a cosmopolitan city with great shopping restaurants, cafés, bars and a vibrant nightlife.
Parks, museums, theatres, monuments and more are just some of the attractions of this culturally rich city, which also makes a great base for exploring the rest of the country.
Surfing and Beaches in El Salvador
There are numerous beaches in El Salvador, though the best renowned location is the La Libertad region. In particular is El Sunzal Beach – said to be the best in El Salvador and one of the top ten surfing destinations in the world.
Puerto de la Libertad also has surfing and beach opportunities. This is a larger port town, so there’s more to see and do here in terms of tourism. Seafood is very popular and affordable and the shrimp cocktails are a local specialty.
Mayan Sites in El Salvador
When not enjoying the surf, El Salvador is a great country to experience the ancient Mayan culture. There are several Mayan sites here, the most notable of which are Joya de Ceren and Tazumal.
Joya de Ceren is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which features a pre-Colombian Maya farming village. What’s unique about this site is the fact that it has been preserved under layers of volcanic ash and is hence often referred to as the Pompeii of the Americas.
Tazumal features the more famous Mayan style of architecture – a large pyramid shaped structure, 23 metres high. Tazumal is actually part of a larger archaeological area called Chalchuapa where you’ll find numerous Mayan developments.
When Should You Visit El Salvador?
El Salvador has a tropical climate with distinctive rainy and dry seasons. The temperature stays fairly constant throughout the year, and only drops when you visit higher areas of the country.
Avoid the wet season, which is from May to October, as this is when the majority of El Salvador’s rain falls. Temperatures are typically tropical – hot and humid.
