The Tourist Attractions of Guatemala

Cities

The capital and largest city is Guatemala City. This is a colourful and modern city, but being inland it’s not frequented by tourists as much as some of the other destinations in the country. Still there are a good variety of attractions here and the city is certainly worth some of your time whilst in Guatemala. Palacio Nacional, Parque Central, and numerous museums are among the things to see here.

La Antigua Guatemala is a historical city and was the Spanish colonial capital of Central America. The city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and popular tourist destination. The whole of the city is full of historical buildings and things to see, including churches, cathedrals and a market. Above the city on a hill is a large cross, from which the views are great.

Along with Antigua, Panajachel is another top tourist destination. This is a relatively small and attractive town which is popular because it’s the gateway to Lake Atitlan – a scenic, volcanic lake which is popular with hikers and backpackers.

Mayan Ruins

Guatemala has an excellent selection of Mayan ruins. Most of them are impressive, though there are a couple of sites which stand out above the rest…

Tikal was a very large Mayan city built during the Classic period, and has long been considered the largest Maya ruins. Built over a thousand years ago, more of the city is still being discovered and tourists can see impressive temples and structures, many of which have been restored. On some of the temples you’re allowed to climb to the top from where you get views over the city, and you’ll see other temples poking their heads from our of the jungles!

Tikal as designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the extensive ruins will require at least a day to get a really good feel for them.

El Mirador is another ruined Maya city. This is not as popular as Tikal because it’s still being investigated and unearthed, so there’s not as much to see currently as there is at Tikal. However, it is believed that El Mirador may rival Tikal in size. These are just two of around 20 Maya sites in total around Guatemala.

Coastal Resorts

With a coast both on the Pacific Ocean and a smaller coast on the Caribbean Sea, Guatemala has plenty of coastal resort towns and cities t enjoy too.

Monterrico is the most popular beach town in Guatemala, and is the closest to Guatemala City. What’s attractive about Monterrico is the black sand, which is a result of volcanic activity.

When Should You Visit Guatemala?

Although the climate varies somewhat across the country, from the coastal lowlands of the Pacific to the interior mountains, and down to the lowlands of the Caribbean, in the main it’s classified as being tropical. Lowlands are hot and humid, whilst the highlands are a little cooler and are less humid. Rainy seasons are from mid-May to mid-October or November, whilst March and April are particularly hot, especially on the Pacific coast.
