Places in Honduras
Honduras is a country in Central America which has a large coastline on the Caribbean Sea, and a far smaller coastline on the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by the countries Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, and was formerly known as Spanish Honduras. Although the Spanish influence is still very apparent, Honduras actually gained independence from Spain back in 1821.
International flights to Honduras from the UK are served by two major international airports: Tegucigalpa (airport code: TGU) and San Pedro Sula (airport code: SAP). Flights to Honduras from the UK are indirect with one or two connections. Choose from airlines such as Continental Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Lufthansa, and Air Canada which provide either one or two stop flights to Honduras. San Pedro Sula Airport welcomes a greater number of one stop flights than the Tegucigalpa Airport does.
The Tourist Attractions of Honduras
Honduras is an attractive country with numerous things for tourists to see and do. The Spanish influence can be seen in its colonial architecture, whilst its Mayan ruins tell stories of more ancient civilisations. Then there are the extensive beaches and coastline, and the modern cities.
Tegucigalpa
The capital and largest city in Honduras is Tegucigalpa. Most of what tourists hear about Tegucigalpa is negative, and with this bad reputation the city really isn’t frequented by tourists as much as it might be. The distance from the great beaches of Honduras, and the country’s other attractions also combine to make this city less desirable, but if you’re willing to give it a try you’ll find the capital city can have some appealing elements!
Parque el Picacho, for example, is a park situated on a hill above the city which is a pleasant and clean space with great views, plus a huge statue of Jesus. Nearby is the National Zoo, whilst Parque La Leona is situated within one of the older city neighbourhoods.
Bay Islands
Visitors looking for some of Honduras’ great beaches will find the Bay Islands is one of the country’s tourist hotspots. This group of islands is just off the northern coast, and situated within the Bay of Honduras, part of the greater Caribbean Sea.
The three main islands are Utila, Roatan and Guanaja. Of these, Roatan is the largest and most developed but very beautiful all the same. Roatan is best known for its great scuba diving opportunities as it’s situated near the second largest coral reef in the world.
If you prefer to stay on the mainland of Honduras, there are plenty of other locations with beaches. La Ceiba is one example as there are beaches here, plus the convenience of being the third largest city in the country.
Copan
Copan Ruinas is a modern town near the Copan ruins of an ancient Maya civilisation. Although not as popular as some of the other major Central American ruins, visitors will find these are less crowded, and some say just as good, if not better, than others.
Other Attractions in Honduras
Amongst the other attractions in Honduras is the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, which is the largest tropical rainforest in Central America. There’s also Lake Yojoa, plus the pleasant colonial town, and former capital, Comayagua.
When Should You Visit Honduras?
Honduras has a mainly subtropical climate, which becomes cooler in the highlands of the country. On the Caribbean Sea coast it’s primarily hot and humid, and susceptible to hurricanes – the last one to do major damage was Mitch in 1998. Daytime high temperatures here, and on the Pacific Coast range from 28C to 32C.
