The Tourist Attractions of San Pedro Sula
Along with the capital city, Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula has a major international airport and is linked to many other cities within the country via bus services. This makes San Pedro Sula a popular entry point to the country, and a good place to base oneself to see many of the nearby attractions.
Within San Pedro Sula itself there are a couple of attractions of interest, however, this city does lack some of the colonial architecture which visitors will find in some of the other cities in Honduras.
The Museum of Anthropology and History (Museo de Antropologia e Historia) is an interesting visit. This features a general history of Honduras, as well as one more specific to San Pedro Sula. The city’s two other museums, the Museo de la Naturaleza, and the Planetario Infantil, deal with the local flora and fauna, and astronomy, respectively.
There is a Central Park, though don’t expect anything on the scale of New York’s central Park! The main attraction here is the gazebo which marks the spot where the city was founded.
Other popular locations include San Pedro Sula’s shopping malls, of which there are several, plus the market – Mercado Guamilito, where visitors can pick up ore locally made crafts and souvenirs. If the shopping leaves you a little hot under the collar, you can cool off in one of the three water parks in San Pedro Sula!
San Pedro Sula is also used as a base from which to visit other nearby attractions. Within a three hour drive are the Maya ruins of Copan. Another day trip is to Lake Yojoa (the largest lake in Honduras) and the beautiful Pulhapanzak Waterfalls. Other scenic trips include the Cusuco Cloud Forest, which will require a vehicle for four wheel drive to really make the most of the scenery and bird and wildlife. For a more man-made tour, tourists can visit the Omoa Fortress. This is a fortress dating from the 1700’s, and a popular excursion when combined with a visit to nearby beaches.
These tours and more should be available to book from San Pedro Sula, and possible even from within your hotel.
When Should You Visit San Pedro Sula?
Lying close to the Caribbean Sea coast, San Pedro Sula benefits from the same subtropical climate. This gives the city heat and humidity, but can also mean that it could suffer from damage from hurricanes, if they make landfall here. Tourists are therefore advised to avoid visiting during the hurricane season.
