Tegucigalpa is the capital and largest city of Honduras, in Central America. Situated inland, the city sits at an elevation of 990 metres (3200 ft) in a chain of mountains, and offers parks, colonial buildings and history.

Tegucigalpa Tourist Attractions

Tegucigalpa is quite a sprawling city and though it does have a selection of tourist attractions, its main features are not as well known as some other capitals in Central America. However, where Tegucigalpa wins out is the fact that the city is at elevation and hence doesn’t have the insufferable heat that other cities in this part of the world endure; this makes Tegucigalpa a popular choice with many tourists!

Museums in Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa is better known for its attractive architecture than its museums but if you have time to kill and are interested in finding out more about the city and the country of Honduras you may find these worth a visit. Amongst those on offer are the recently founded Identidad Nacional (Museum of National Identity), the Historia Natural (Natural History Museum), and the Galeria de Arte Nacional (National Art Gallery). Also, aimed more at children, is Chiminikee, a science park and museum.

Architecture in Tegucigalpa

Beautiful churches and other architecture in Tegucigalpa includes the Metropolitan Cathedral, Our Lady of Suyapa Shrine – the Basilica of the Virgin of Suyapa, and the former Presidential Palace which is now a museum.

Tegucigalpa Parks

Tegucigalpa has several impressive parks, though the two major ones are Parque la Leona, and Parque al Picacho.

Parque la Leona is in the centre of the city but within an old neighbourhood, reached via hilly winding streets. Although getting to the park takes a little effort the journey is worth while as you get to see a different part of the city, and get beautiful views from the top.

Parque el Picacho also overlooks the city and is dominated, and named after, the large statue of Jesus called Cristo el Picacho. Within the same area is the National Zoo. Visitors who are used to seeing the more natural enclosures that are common in many cities these days will find the National Zoo is quite a disappointment and somewhat depressing when you consider the unhappiness of the animals here. If you can look past this there is actually quite a comprehensive collection.

Shopping in Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa does feature several large, and some smaller, shopping centres, the largest of which is Multiplaza. This is popular because it includes a shopping mall as well as a cinema, restaurants, a grocery store and more. For a more traditional form of Honduran shopping try the San Isidrio Market by the river.

When Should You Visit Tegucigalpa?

Although Tegucigalpa has a tropical climate it is tempered by the elevation of the city, this makes Tegus less humid and more comfortable than other cities in Central America. Temperatures average between 19 and 23C (66 to 73F) throughout the year, with December and January being the coolest months, and March and April the hottest. From June to November is hurricane season and as Tegucigalpa has been hit in the past there is always the possibility of another strike.
