Central America is the land isthmus that connects North America with South America and is geographically considered to be a part of the North American continent. Central America consists of seven countries, running from north to south these are Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Each has its own unique attractions and appeal.
Flights to Central America
Each of the seven Central American countries has its own international airport and they are fairly well connected with the rest of the world in terms of the number of airlines offering flights.
Belize
The second smallest country in Central America is Belize. Situated on the Caribbean side of the isthmus, Belize borders with Mexico and Guatemala. This former British colony still has English as the official language and offers some wonderful tourist destinations.
The international airport for Belize is Philip S.W. Goldson (airport code: BZE), near the capital, Belize City. From the UK there are no direct flights to Belize and travellers would need to make two connections for flights to this Central American country. Airlines include Virgin Atlantic, Continental, KLM, United Airlines and Delta, and one stop would be in the USA.
Guatemala
One of the larger countries, Guatemala borders with Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. This Pacific Coast country offers jungles, ancient ruins, great beaches, and scenic mountains.
Located near the capital, Guatemala City, La Aurora International Airport (airport code: GUA) serves one stop flights from the UK with airlines that include Continental, American Airlines, Mexicana, Copa Airlines, United Airlines, Iberia, and Virgin Atlantic.
El Salvador
The smallest country in Central America, and indeed one of the smallest in the world, is El Salvador. Situated on the Pacific side, El Salvador is bordered by Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Although small, it’s becoming known as one of the world’s best surfing destinations and also offers some excellent Maya civilisation ruins.
Flights to this Central American country from the UK are also indirect, and will require one or two stops depending on the airline. El Salvador International Airport (airport code: SAL) is situated in Comalapa, about 45 minutes from the capital city, San Salvador. Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, Delta, US Airways, United Airlines, and Continental Airlines all offer one stop flights, or Iberia has two stop flights.
Honduras
The second largest country in Central America is Honduras which has a coastline on both the Caribbean and the Pacific. Honduras benefits from many great beaches as well as some find colonial architecture and Maya ruins.
There are two international airports in Honduras – San Pedro Sula (airport code: SAP), and Tegucigalpa (airport code: TGU). Flights from the UK are indirect with one or two connections, though the San Pedro Sula airport serves a great number of airlines that offer one stop flights with airlines such as Air Canada, Lufthansa, Continental Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta.
Nicaragua
Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. It also benefits from a coast on both the Caribbean and the Pacific, plus it features two large lakes, and popular colonial cities such as Granada and Leon.
Indirect flights with one or two stops to this Central American country are offered by Virgin Atlantic, United Airlines, Air France, Delta, and Continental. The international airport is at the capital, Managua (airport code: MGA).
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is emerging as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central America with its eco friendly approach to tourism and life. Fantastic national parks, scenery and beaches are the main appeals.
From the UK there are plenty of one stop flights to Costa Rica, flying to the Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO) in the capital city, San Jose. Choose from Continental Airways, Iberia, United Airlines, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Delta and more.
Panama
The country furthest south in Central American is Panama. Best known for the Panama Canal, the country also has a popular capital city, national parks and excellent beaches.
Flights from the UK require one or two stops to the Tocumen International Airport (airport code: PTY), 20 miles from Panama City. Airlines include Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Iberia, Air France, and Continental Airlines.
