Places in Nicaragua
Nicaragua is a country in Central America, bordered by Costa Rica to the south and Honduras to the north. Water plays a big part in any holiday to Nicaragua as the country has a coast on the Caribbean Sea and one on the Pacific Ocean, plus two large lakes, though there’s also a lot more to see here too.
International flights to Nicaragua are welcomed in the capital, Managua (airport code: MGA). Your journey to Nicaragua from the UK will require indirect flights with either one or two stops. Airlines such as Air France and Delta Air Lines provide travellers with one stop flights to Nicaragua flying via Atlanta, in the US. Continental Airlines, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic Airways are among the other airlines offering two stop flights to Nicaragua from the UK.
The Tourist Attractions of Nicaragua
Managua
The capital and largest city of Nicaragua is Managua, situated inland though on the lakeshore of Managua Lake. In terms of tourism, Managua has some nice places to see though it certainly isn’t the highlight of a visit to Nicaragua.
Attractions include the ruins of Managua Cathedral. This beautiful building was extensively damaged along with many other of the city’s buildings during a large earthquake which struck in 1972. Also popular is the Palacio Nacional, which is the old national palace and now an interesting museum. For something different, and especially appealing to tourists who like a little adventure, is the Tiscapa Lagoon. This is a lagoon which has formed in the crater of an extinct volcano, and for a fee you can zip-line over it!
Granada
The city of Granada is far more popular with the tourists. It is easily accessible from Managua, the journey taking about 40 minutes. This is the oldest colonial city in Nicaragua and is also said to be the oldest colonial city in the western hemisphere. It is on the shore of the largest lake, Lake Nicaragua, and is full of many attractive buildings.
The Central Park is a nice area in the centre of the city, and is surrounded by handsome coloured colonial houses and the cathedral. Tourists should also visit the 6 main churches of the city, and the 18th century fort, Fuerte La Polvora. Being situated on the shore of the 10th largest fresh water lake in the world, Lake Nicaragua (also called Lake Cocibolca) is a nice place to take a boat trip to the lake’s islands.
Leon
In stiff competition with Granada, Leon is also an old colonial city and one of the oldest cities in Nicaragua, though its colonial architecture has not been as well preserved as that of Granada. The most significant building is the huge cathedral, the largest in Central America, called the Cathedral of Leon. Other attractions include the old colonial church of Iglesia de San Juan Bautista de Subtiava, plus the various murals all around the city.
Natural Attractions in Nicaragua
Nicaragua has many beautiful and popular natural attractions for visitors to enjoy too. These include an assortment of volcanoes, including Masaya which is within the Masaya Volcano National Park, just outside Managua. This is an active volcano which constantly spews sulphuric smoke.
Nicaragua also has many lovely lagoons, natural reserves, biosphere reserves, wildlife refuges, islands, and more to explore.
When Should You Visit Nicaragua?
On the lowlands and coasts of Nicaragua the country has a tropical climate, known for being especially hot in the Pacific lowlands. The highlands, as you would expect, are a little cooler. The Caribbean coast is sometimes in the path of hurricanes, so visitors should be aware of this threat if coming in the summer and autumn.
