Panama is a country in Central America. It is the last country on the long isthmus that connects North and South America and borders with Colombia to the southeast, and Costa Rica to the northwest. Panama also benefits from a coast on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Panama is probably best known for the Panama Canal, one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

Flights to Panama will arrive at the Tocumen International Airport (airport code: PTY) located 20 miles east of the capital, Panama City. From the UK flights to Panama are indirect requiring either one or two stops. Airlines offering this route include Iberia, Air France, Continental Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and Delta Air Lines, who all fly to Panama from the UK via one connection. There are a variety of flight routes available depending on the airline, for example, Air France flies via Atlanta, and Iberia via Madrid.

Panama Tourist Attractions

Though best known for the Panama Canal, Panama does in fact have a variety of other things to attract the tourist. These include beaches, cities, mountains, jungles, and history.

Panama City

The capital and largest city is Panama City. This bustling and vibrant city has more than enough to keep the inquisitive traveller busy for a number of days, combining both modern and historical attractions. Old Panama (Panama Viejo) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This archaeological site is where the first Spanish Pacific coast city was founded in 1519. The ruins of the old city and the museum here make this an interesting place to visit.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site that is also in Panama City is the historic part of the current city, called Casco Viejo (or sometimes Casco Antiguo). Colonial style buildings stand aside buildings from other periods in the country’s history, and most of the city’s monuments can be found here too including the main cathedral, churches and more.

Panama Canal

Obviously the Panama Canal spans the width of Panama, but one of the most easily accessible points at which to see it is from the capital city. Panama City sits on the Pacific coast, just at the entrance to the Panama Canal, so it is quick and easy to get here from the city centre.

The Miraflores locks are the most popular spot. Visit the museum here and watch the huge ships make their way through. You can get here by taxi, or join an organised boat trip, or the train which runs alongside the canal.

National Parks of Panama

Panama has some outstanding natural beauty to see and there are several national parks and protected areas around the country.

Volcano Baru National Park is in the north and features Panama’s highest peak. This dormant volcano has hot springs and is popular to climb though takes all day.

Coiba National Marine Park is known for its great diving and snorkelling opportunities giving divers the chance to see rare species of marine life. The marine park encompasses the island of Coiba plus 37 surrounding islands and islets.

Throughout the country there are always plenty of hiking trails to try and a variety of eco systems to experience. Plus don’t forget that Panama also has some excellent beaches to enjoy too!

When Should You Visit Panama?

Panama has a typical tropical climate which gives visitors high temperatures with little variation in averages throughout the year. There are differences across the country though – the Pacific coast is a little cooler than the Caribbean coast for example. The rainy season, when the majority of the country’s rain falls is usually from April to December.
