Albania is situated in south east Europe and has a sizeable coast on the Adriatic Sea which is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to neighbouring Greece. In addition to the Albanian Riviera, Albania is also growing in popularity for its culture, cities, archaeology and the Albanian Alps for skiing.

The main gateway for flights to Albania is the capital city, Tirana. Mother Teresa International Airport (airport code: TIA) is located only 15 minutes out from the city centre. From the UK flights to Albania are available with several airlines, most of which do require one change though. British Airways offers a direct flight from London Gatwick, or one stop flights to Albania are offered with Jat Airways, Adria Airways, Lufthansa and Austrian flying via Belgrade, Ljubljana, Munich and Vienna respectively. Or two stop flights to Albania from the UK are available with BMI and KLM.

The Tourist Attractions of Albania

Although not on a par with Greece in terms of visitor numbers, Albania is increasingly growing popular as an alternative tourist destination. Having been a communist country for many years, Albania is now recovering and areas such as the tourist infrastructure are being improved as they try to encourage visitors here. Facilities and services may not be as well developed in Greece, for example, but Albania does have a lot to offer and perhaps now, before the hoards of tourists discover the country, would be an excellent time to visit!

Cities of Albania

The capital and largest city of Albania is Tirana. Located centrally within the country, this is the main entry point for international visitors entering the country by air and is an attractive place for visitors to spend several days.

Skanderbeg Square is the centre of several of the city’s attractions, including the National History Museum, the Et’hem Bey Mosque, the Opera and the Clock Tower.

Several of Albania’s cities have UNESCO World Heritage Sites in them. Berat, which is thought to be one of the oldest towns in Albania features wonderful Byzantine and Ottoman Albanian architecture including Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques and the Kala, a 13th century castle. The city of Gjirokaster is also UNESCO listed. Its main feature is the castle at the top of the hill which is reputedly the second largest castle in the Balkans. The city also features much Ottoman architecture. The ancient city of Kruje also includes a castle as well as pretty cobbled streets and mountain vistas.

Not far from Tirana is Petrela Castle, one of the best preserved in Albania. And another attraction near Tirana is Mount Dajti which you can climb by cable car. The views of the city from the top are spectacular.

The Albanian Riviera

The extensive Adriatic Sea coastline of Albania makes this a great spot for summer beach holidays. There are beautiful beaches, especially in the popular town of Sarande. The horseshoe shaped bay and the backdrop of mountains makes this a very picturesque destination and in fact it is said to be one of the prettiest towns on the coast. If you’d like to base yourself in Sarande there are plenty of things to see and do in this area too including the ancient city of Butrint, another of Albania’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

When Should You Visit?

Albania is a mountainous country, 70% of the land is mountains. This means there are numerous possibilities for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter! With the higher elevations obviously the temperatures are cooler, but on the coastal lowlands summers are very pleasant. Temperatures here can get quite high and rainfall is low though humidity can be high. The average summer temperature is 24C, though actual daily high temperatures will get hotter than this.
