Tirana is the capital and largest city of the south eastern European country of Albania. Located fairly centrally within the country, Tirana offers visitors a range of interesting buildings and scenery.

Indirect flights with either one or two stops are available with Lufthansa, Austrian, BMI, Air France, Jat Airways, KLM, Adria Airways, and British Airways. Connecting cities vary among the airlines, though you can choose to travel with Jat Airways via Belgrade, Adria Airways via Ljubljana, or Lufthansa via Munich or Vienna.

The Tourist Attractions of Tirana

Tirana has been the capital of Albania since 1920 though the city is much older than this as it was founded in 1614 by Sulejman Pasha, of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman influences are still easy to see to this day in Tirana, including mosques and a statue of Pasha himself within a square named after him.

At the centre of the city is the Sheshi Skenderbej (Skanderbeg Square). This has been the heart of the city for many years and is the location of the Et’hem Bey Mosque and Clock Tower. Although from the outside the mosque does not look at spectacular as some famous mosques, the inside is intricately decorated with frescoes. Construction of the mosque began in 1789 and was not finished until 1823 by the great grandson of Sulejman Pasha. When prayers are not taking place you can tour the mosque.

Right next door to the mosque is the Clock Tower (Kulla e Sahatit). This was built in the 1820’s and has become almost a national symbol of Tirana. The best thing for visitors is that you can inside the clock tower and admire the views.

Also on the square is the National History Museum. This is a very interested visit if you’re keen to learn more about Tirana’s and Albanian’s history and periods of occupation from ancient times right through to the present day.

A short distance from Tirana city centre is the Petrela Castle. This is one of the country’s best preserved castles and worth the visit. On a more modern note is Tirana’s International Centre of Culture. This building is also known as Piramida, and once you see it you will understand why! The pyramid shaped building was originally a museum dedicated to Enver Hoxha, one of the founder’s of the Communist Party of Albania. Now the building is used for conferences and other events.

Overlooking Tirana is Mount Datja. If you’d like to get out of the city for a day this is a nice place to go and there is a cable car which takes you to the top. You can stay in this area for a night or two as there are hotels and restaurants here.

When Should You Visit Tirana?

Tirana can be best classified as having a Mediterranean climate so the temperatures remain mild to hot all year round. Summer is the best time to visit for higher temperatures and also the lowest amount of rainfall. But from October, although temperatures are still warm, the amount of rainfall increases greatly, with November being the wettest month.
