The Tourist Attractions of Austria

The Alps

Whether it's summer or winter the Austrian Alps are a hugely popular travel destination with advantages of visiting in either season.

The Alps take up 3/4 of the land area of Austria, so they're hard to miss! Great skiing opportunities are abound in the winter and there are a great many famous and not so famous ski resorts to choose from which will vary according to price, facilities and reputation. The reputation of Kitzbuehel for example is its vibrant nightlife and après ski scene, so visitors looking for plenty of action after a day of skiing the slopes will enjoy visiting here! The largest ski area in Austria is SkiWelt, or the ones which royalty love to visit are Lech and Zürs am Arlberg.

Alpine villages and spectacular scenery are the main draws to Austria's Alps in the summer. Hiking and mountaineering have always been popular and now more and more people are visiting for cycling too, but in the lower, flatter regions! One of the most popular summertime destinations is the lake region of Worthersee which amongst other things has the warmest lake in Austria.

Vienna

The timeless city of Vienna is also one of the top tourist attractions in Austria. This is the capital city of Austria, as well as being the largest city in the country and is most famous for its architecture, culture and music. The historic centre is wonderful and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city features castles, such as Schonbrunn and Stephensdom, as well as the New Palace, the Belvedere and the Opera House, plus many fantastic museums in the Museum District.

Salzburg

Although there are several other great cities in Austria, Salzburg is one of the most popular. Many fans come here to see familiar sights from the Sound of Music which was filmed around the historic city, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are castles to see here too including Schloss Hellbrunn and Schloss Mirabell, and other attractions include the birthplace of composer Mozart and the Untersberg Mountain which you can visit by cable car.

When Should You Visit Austria?

If you want to visit Austria to take advantage of the great skiing here then obviously you'll want to come in the winter! Ski seasons can vary from resort to resort, but generally the main skiing season will run from December to March. Ski conditions are said to be best in January, though this is the coldest month in Austria.

The temperate climate of Austria means that summers are pleasantly warm with average high temperatures in July and August of around 25C.
