Klagenfurt is the capital city of the Carinthia region in southern Austria. It’s been a town since the late 12th century and is the sixth largest in the country, featuring multiple places of interest for visiting tourists.

Flights to Klagenfurt

Klagenfurt Airport (airport code: KLU) is a small airport, but international all the same. It’s located just a couple of miles outside the city and accessible by bus. There’s just one airline that offers direct flights to Klagenfurt from the UK, and that’s Ryanair, flying from Stansted. Other airlines do have flights to Klagenfurt but with one or two stops. These include BMI, Austrian, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus, and British Airlines for one stop, or Swiss and KLM have flights to Klagenfurt from the UK but with two connections. Routes differ according to the airlines but most fly via Vienna or Munich.

Klagenfurt Tourist Attractions

Minimundus

The Minimundus is an unusual park filled with miniature buildings, representing major landmarks around the world. You can see scale models of the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Taj Mahal, the Sydney Opera House and the CN Tower to name a few. There is an admission fee, and the park is closed during the winter months.

Reptilienzoo Happ

Not far from Minimundus is a small zoo with a large collection of reptiles as well as other interesting animals, named the Reptilienzoo Happ. Closed during November, the zoo is otherwise open daily from 8am until 6pm (winter months open at 10am).

Hochosterwitz Castle

One of several castles in the area, the Hochosterwitz Castle is the most impressive medieval castle in Austria. Considering it is more than 1,000 years old, the compound is in excellent shape. There are tours given to the public between Easter and October. The castle is a short train ride away near the town of Sankt Veit an der Glan.

Lindworm Fountain

The large statue and fountain in the middle of Klagenfurt was built at the end of the 1500s, and it’s shaped like a dragon that plays a role in the legendary origins on the city. It's the main landmark for the town, so visitors usually visit for a photo or two.

Kreuzbergl

Kreuzbergl is a small local mountain where you can find parks, ponds, walking trails and a number of other sights. At the top is an old observation tower where you can see some wonderful views, and the telescope gives more views of the sky at night. There are several old houses and churches in the area too. It's a great area to see for some quiet time outdoors.

Kaerntner Heimatwerk

A craft market that sells local goods, Kaertner Heimatwerk is very popular with souvenir shoppers. The market is open every day but Sunday, and they do close for a couple hours over the lunch break during the week. You can find the market at Herrengasse 2.

Karntner Landesmuseum

Klagenfurt is home to the largest museum in the country, filled with historical exhibits on the region as well as natural history, geology, archaeology and artwork.

When Should You Visit Klagenfurt?

Winters in Klagenfurt are quite cold, and are probably not the best time to visit. There are also only a few hours of daylight between November and February. Several attractions are closed during the winter anyway. May to September are warm and comfortable for travel, with highs between 20 and 25C on average (68 to 77F). That's generally as hot as it gets in Klagenfurt.
