Salzburg Tourist Attractions

The Old Town

Top of the agenda when visiting Salzburg is the Old Town. This particularly old town is one of the best preserved in this part of Europe and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, in recognition of its wonderful romantic baroque architecture. Salzburg Old Town is hence a lovely place to walk around, admiring all the great architecture and history, and it’s home to many of the city’s most popular attractions.

There’s the 17th century Salzburg Cathedral which is the main building on the old town’s skyline and it features that famous baroque architecture. Nonnberg Abbey is another major landmark of Salzburg which became famous since this is where Maria Von Trapp (the inspiration for The Sound of Music) was a teacher. Nonnberg Abbey includes a Benedictine monastery and an abbey school, at which she taught.

Overlooking the entire old town of Salzburg is the High Salzburg Fortress, otherwise known as Hohensalzburg Castle. The castle has benefited from restoration works, and is now one of the best preserved in Europe, as well as being one of the largest medieval castles in Europe.

The Palace of Mirabell

Talking of The Sound of Music, fans of this movie will know that Salzburg was used for many of the filming locations. Several were filmed within the Palace of Mirabell and its gardens, which is outside of Salzburg old town. You’ll find the fountain, where the Do-Re-Mi song was sung, and the gardens are beautifully landscaped and pleasant to walk around.

There are several other palaces in Salzburg as well, such as Schloss Hellbrunn and Schloss Leopoldskron, plus there are many other parts of Salzburg where The Sound of Music was filmed. Many tourists who are interested in seeing locations where The Sound of Music was filmed can join a guided tour as this is the best way to get to see them all.

Salzburg Zoo

For a change of scenery from the cityscape, and especially recommended if you’re visiting with children, Salzburg Zoo makes for a fun afternoon. It’s quite a large zoo with over 800 animals representing 140 different species, and there is a petting zoo designed specifically for children.

When Should You Visit Salzburg?

Salzburg is nice in the summer or the winter, though if you come in the winter expect cool temperatures and lots of snow. By summer temperatures are warm, with average highs around 24C in July and August, though pack an umbrella as this is the wetter time of year.
