Vienna is the capital and largest city of the Central European country of Austria and is renowned for its culture, beauty and history. There are many things for visitors to Vienna to see and do and it makes for a lovely weekend getaway, though to be honest you need longer than a weekend to fully appreciate all that Vienna has to offer!

The Tourist Attractions of Vienna

Visitors to Vienna are in for a real cultural treat with all the museums, galleries, and musical offerings in the city. The historic centre of Vienna was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of this.

If your time in Vienna is limited here are some of the best highlights of the city which you should try to get to see…

Vienna has multiple museums, though the one which really stands out is the Museum of Fine Arts (Kunsthistorisches Museum). For one thing this is set within a palace and the building itself is worth seeing, but this museum is similar to the Louvre in Paris in many ways. It’s very large and real art lovers will want to spend more than a day making the most of its exhibits.

In the New Palace (Neue Hofburg) there are several museums – parts of the Museum of Fine Arts can be found here in addition to the Ethnological Museum, the Ephesus Museum, the world’s second largest Collection of Arms and the Collection of Historical Musical Instruments. Also whilst you’re in the palace visit the Imperial Treasury (Schatzkammer).

Vienna has a whole host of religious buildings built during various periods in the city’s past. One of the most interesting is St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom). This one stands out because of the fact that you can climb the North Tower for great views of the city, and at the other end of the cathedral are the catacombs. Tours of the cathedral are available and are best advised to make the most of this building which combines several different architectural styles such as Renaissance, Romanesque and Gothic.

Vienna’s most popular attraction is Schonbunn Castle (Schloss Schonbrunn). This is situated just outside the city centre though it’s easily accessible by underground. Tours of the castle itself are offered, which are interesting, plus the grounds have lots of attractions too – the gardens and zoo date from 1752, which apparently makes them the oldest in the world, and the Palace Park also has a maze and a labyrinth too.

If you fancy a sit down for a while hop on board one of the trams which take you on the ring road around the outside of the historical city centre of Vienna. From this tram you can see many of the high class areas of Vienna, and the high class people too!

When Should You Visit Vienna?

Vienna has a pleasant climate which never gets too hot and never too cold. The city seems to be affected by a constant light wind. During the summer this serves to keep visitors cool, even on the hottest days, though during the winter it can make the city feel colder than it actually is, so make sure you take a scarf, hat and gloves if visiting in the winter to keep the cool wind off.
