Antwerp Tourist Attractions
Het Steen
A medieval castle in the old city centre of Antwerp, Het Steen was built in the early 1200s and has been restored and even moved in the meantime. Today, there is a maritime museum inside and there is a small fee for entrance.
Antwerp Zoo
Antwerp Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world, founded in 1843. There are more than 5,000 animals at the zoo, representing nearly 1,000 different species from around the world. There are facilities for penguins, elephants, meerkats, tigers, monkeys, and birds of prey. Many of the buildings represent classic architecture due to their age, and are worth the visit almost as much as the animals. Through the year, the zoo opens at 10am but closes at varying times due to the season (no earlier than 4:45pm).
Historical Churches
There are several old churches and cathedrals in Antwerp that you should try to see while you are there. St. James Church is a 15th century Gothic church located on Lange Nieuwstraat 73. The Cathedral of our Lady took hundreds of years to complete and never did get the 2 spires that were in the original design. Nonetheless, this tall Gothic cathedral is a popular tourist site. It's just a few blocks from Het Steen.
Rubenshuis
Originally, the Rubenshuis was the residence of world-renowned painter Peter Paul Reubens, and today it is a museum that celebrates his life and artwork. The building is an Italian Renaissance villa and is beautiful in itself. There is a fee for entrance though children and seniors are free.
Plantin Moretus Museum
A museum that showcases the history of printing and books, Plantin Moretus Museum is named for two famous printers who lived in Antwerp: Christoffel Plantijn and Jan Moretus. The collection includes many rare books and 2 of the oldest printing presses in the world.
Aquatopia
Close to but separate from the zoo is the Aquatopia aquarium complex. There are tanks of sharks, coral reefs and a number of other water exhibits representing ecosystems such as swamps and rain forests.
