In Dutch it is known as Brugge, but ‘Bruges’ is the more commonly used name in the English language. Either way, Bruges is one of Europe’s best loved cities and it’s the capital of the West Flanders province, in the north west of Belgium.

Flights to Bruges

The Ostend-Bruges International Airport (airport code: OST) is just 15 miles outside of the city, but it only operates for domestic charter flights to Bruges, and cargo services. So, coming from the UK your flight to Bruges will have to arrive at the Brussels Airport (code: BRU) and either rent a car or take the train for the hour's trip to Bruges. You can get a non-stop flight to Brussels with BMI, British Airways or Brussels Airlines. Or if you fly with Lufthansa or United Airlines, you will make a single stop-over in Munich.

Bruges Tourist Attractions

The centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it has been recognised for its cultural importance with so many well preserved buildings here. It’s that large collection of historic architecture that is the main attraction for tourists visiting Bruges, and along with the city’s canals this makes Bruges one of Belgium;s top tourist destinations.

Bruges Market Square

The large market square of Bruges is the heart and soul of the old city and is often the starting point for tourists visiting Bruges. There are some wonderful historic buildings lining Bruges Market Square, including the tall tower of the Belfry of Bruges, which is open to the public. If you are willing and able to climb the narrow steps up to the top, the views over the old town are very impressive.

The Provincial Court is another major landmark of the Market Square, and though this is not the original medieval building it is striking all the same. This one dates from the late 1800s following a fire in 1887.

Once you’ve seen the major landmarks of the Market Square you can enjoy a meal or just a drink in one of the cafes or restaurants on the square.

Church of Our Lady

Elsewhere in the old town of Bruges is the Church of Our Lady. This church actually stands taller than the famous Belfry of Bruges, and is the tallest structure in the whole city; in fact this is the second tallest brick built tower in the world. The church was built mainly between the 13th and 15th centuries.

Canal Boat Tours

Bruges doesn’t have as many canals as Amsterdam but it is sometimes referred to as the Venice of the North. The canals are an excellent way to see the city though, and a boat trip along them is highly recommended as you will often see parts of Bruges old town that you would not otherwise see.

When Should You Visit Bruges?

Warm weather in the summer makes this a popular time to visit Bruges, but don’t expect high heat here as the average high is only around 21C. Rain should be planned for whenever you visit as Bruges can be a little damp, and from October temperatures begin to get cooler.
