Brussels is the capital and largest city in Belgium, and is situated roughly centrally within the country. As well as the capital of Belgium, Brussels is also considered to be the capital of the European Union and has been given the nickname of ‘Europe’s Capital’ in consideration of this.

Flights to Brussels from the UK are welcomed in the Brussels Airport (airport code: BRU) which is located outside the city of Brussels and can be reached by a 25 minute train ride. Direct flights are offered by a variety of the world’s major airlines. Brussels Airlines, United Airlines, BMI, British Airways, and Lufthansa all provide travellers with direct flights to Brussels from the UK.

The Tourist Attractions of Brussels

Compared to some of Belgium’s other cities, Brussels is thought of more as a business travel destination than one for leisure travellers. Being the heart of the European Union and also the political capital of the world-wide organisation, NATO, Brussels is a very important city, business-wise. But, this isn’t to say there’s nothing here for leisure tourists, and of course business travellers don’t necessarily work the whole time! So here are some of the highlights of a visit to Brussels.

The historic centre is an attractive, though small, part of Brussels. This wasn’t always the case as Brussels used to have an extensive historic heart, just like Bruges. However, in the 19th century, city planners decided to modernise the city when it was chosen to become the capital of Belgium. The older buildings were considered to be impractical for the city’s important role, and hence many of them were demolished.

Visitors will still find a handful of attractive old buildings though. Head to the Main Square, the city’s most famous landmark, which because Brussels is a bi-lingual city is known as both the Grote Markt (Dutch) and la Grande Place (French).

The City Tower is the main attraction, though there are also a variety of other buildings here which all date back about 300 years.

One of Brussels other most famous landmarks is the Manneken Pis. As you might gather from its name, this is a small statue relieving himself! The bronze statue of a child probably wouldn’t be too amusing on its own, but it’s the fact that hundreds of outfits have been made for the little boy that is. Each time you visit he may have a new outfit on, each one carefully designed so that he can pee from the right place!

Like the rest of Belgium, Brussels is well known for its shopping, particularly for lace and chocolate. You’ll find hundreds of chocolate shops here, but do shop around, and don’t be afraid to ask for a sample, because the quality of chocolate, and the price, can vary a lot.

Brussels is home to the world’s first shopping mall, which opened in 1847 and is a great place to visit even if you’re not planning to shop.

Brussels also has a variety of museums on offer. These include the renowned Royal Museum for Central Africa, as well as history museum, art museums and more.

When Should You Visit Brussels?

Brussels has a similar climate to London though is a little cooler on average. Having said this, if you want to visit in the winter the average low rarely drops below freezing. Rainfall is common throughout the year, with no month really being considerably wetter than others – July and December have slightly higher rainfall on average. The summertime highs average in the low 20’s C (around 73F).
