Belgium is situated in north west Europe, and as well as its North Sea coast, this relatively small country borders with the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. It’s well known for its importance within the European Union, especially the capital city, Brussels, and also for its attractive and historic cities like Bruges.

International flights to Belgium are served by the Brussels Airport (airport code: BRU). The airport is located outside of Brussels and can be reached by a train running every 15 minutes, and taking about 15 minutes. Travellers can choose from a variety of airlines offering direct flights to Belgium from the UK. BMI, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, and United Airlines are among the major world airlines offering direct flights to Belgium from the UK.

The Tourist Attractions of Belgium

Brussels

Brussels is the capital and largest city of Belgium. Widely considered to be the ‘capital’ of the EU, Brussels is more commonly visited for business than for pleasure, however this doesn’t mean the city has no tourist attractions. Though not as appealing as Bruges, Brussels does have a historic centre, all be it a small one!

Being a bi-lingual city (French and Dutch) you’ll find that places have two names – La Grande Place, also known as de Grote Markt, is the main square where visitors can relax in one of the many restaurants or cafés.

Bruges

The city of Bruges is really better known and loved as a tourist destination. This attractive city makes for a great weekend break from the UK, though there’s easily enough to keep you occupied for longer.

What makes the historic centre so attractive is the fact that it is almost all pedestrianised. This means you can walk around at your leisure and not have to worry about traffic and congestion, making a far more pleasant experience! The historic centre can be easily explored by foot, or if you want to cover more ground why not rent a bicycle and join in with the many hundreds of cyclists using the cycle paths around the city?!

Belgium is famous for its chocolate and lace, and you’ll find these in abundance in Bruges. The main square, called Grote Market features many impressive buildings, such as the Belfry. The views from here are great.

Other Destinations in Belgium

Though not as well known as Bruges, the city of Antwerp also features fantastic historical buildings such as the City Hall on the Old Market Square, mixed with newer buildings, like the art deco styled Boerentoren, from which the views of the city from the 25th floor observation deck are excellent.

Flanders Fields Country is another destination popular with tourists. This region played an important part on events of World War 1, and cities like Ypres hold both wonderful architecture and reminders of this time. The In Flanders Field Museum tells visitors more.

When Should You Visit Belgium?

Belgium has a temperate climate, much like that of the UK. This gives the country mild, but somewhat damp, weather, with temperatures averaging a little colder than in the UK. July and August reach averages in the low 20’s C (about 73F), but July is also one of the wetter months.
