The Tourist Attractions of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Sarajevo
Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Once war-torn, the city is now back on its feet again and offers a pleasant destination for tourists to visit. The Old Town is a favourite attraction where there are many churches to see, though the presence of synagogues and mosques may be a little surprising to some visitors. The whole of the Old City feels more Middle Eastern than European, but it’s these differences that make Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital city what it is.
The Bosnian Historical Museum and the National Museum show visitors more about the history of the country, whilst the Latin Bridge is a famous landmark.
Other Cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina
A number of other cities in the country also hold attractions for tourists, mainly historical and cultural. Mostar, for example, is a beautiful city, though suffered some damage during the war. The old Stari Mostar Bridge which links the two halves of the city was destroyed during the war, though a new replica bridge has now been constructed.
Doboj Fortress, in the historical city of Doboj, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s top tourist attractions, and is often best remembered for its fantastic views over the city. Finally, the city of Banja Luka is also on the tourist trail. Here you’ll find another fortress – Kastel Fortress dates back to Roman times, plus there’s an Ottoman mosque from the 16th century.
The Mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina
A large part of Bosnia and Herzegovina is mountainous. This allows for plenty of skiing in the winter, and hiking and sightseeing in the summer.
The Dinaric Alps are home to two of the country’s top ski resorts, Bjelasnica and Jahorina. These were used for the 14th Winter Olympics, back in 1984, and are really only more recently coming to be known as a great skiing location. Visitors will no doubt enjoy the fact that these resorts are quieter than many big name European destinations, giving the benefit of shorter lift queues and more skiing time!
When Should You Visit Bosnia and Herzegovina?
The climate of Bosnia and Herzegovina varies according to elevation. There are lowlands around the small coastal region where summers are hot, and winters are mild and wet. The mountain regions will have cooler temperatures during the summer and the winter, and obviously enough snow to make these good skiing destinations! Winters in the mountains can be quite harsh though, so visitors should expect colder weather than perhaps is usually experienced in some other European ski resorts.
