If you’re only coming to Bulgaria for a short break, the chances are you will be coming to the capital and largest city, Sofia. This ancient city is certainly competing with the likes of Prague and Budapest for its culture and architecture, and has numerous wonderful sites to visit.
Among the highlights of a visit to Bulgaria’s capital city are the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, and the Boyana Church and Church of Sv. Georgi. Sofia also has many excellent museums, which include the National Museum of History, the National Archaeological Museum, and the National Art Gallery.
Mountains and Skiing in Bulgaria
In addition to popular Sofia, Bulgaria has some spectacular scenery. Its mountains are multi-purpose, providing great skiing in the winter and hiking and mountain biking destinations in the summer. In terms of skiing, Bulgaria is really increasing in popularity as it provides a great alternative to the busier and more expensive ski resorts of Western Europe. Bansko is the most developed ski resort in Bulgaria, and actually has a reputation as being one of the best in Europe. Others include Pamporovo, which is also becoming very popular, plus Borovetz and Vitosha.
For great summertime mountain activities there’s Pirin National Park which incorporates the Pirin Mountains. Hiking and mountain biking are popular pursuits in these mountains, which also offer fantastic scenery with lakes, forests and wildlife too.
The Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria
Bulgaria has quite a long coastline on the Black Sea, and as well as being a popular seaside destination, the Black Sea coast also has some great scenery too. Varna is the most major of Bulgaria’s coastal resorts. This is such a popular town with visitors because not only does it have beaches, but many other attractions too, including aquarium, dolphinarium, Museum of Natural History, and the Varna Archaeological Museum.
When Should You Visit Bulgaria?
If you’re coming to Bulgaria for skiing then you should visit in the winter months following December. The Black Sea coast is at its busiest in the summer, but can also be a pleasant place to visit at other times of the year too. Summertime highs average at 28C in July and August, whilst January is the coldest month of the year with an average high of 2C and low of -4C.
