Sofia Tourist Attractions

Sofia is an ancient city which was founded about 7000 years ago and through the ages has been inhabited by various different civilisations. This makes a walk around the city interesting as here and there you can still see remnants of these different periods in its history. Sofia was originally founded because of its high quality mineral waters, and several mineral water springs still exist in the city to this day.

Churches in Sofia

Sofia is well known for its high number of different denomination churches. The most striking of all of these is the large Alexander Nevsky Cathedral which is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. A short distance away is the Hagia Sophia Church which was built in the 6th century, though a church has stood on this site since before this time. Interestingly, this church was so important in the city’s history that it gave the city its name.

Amongst the other churches the Boyana Church is one of the major attractions. It’s only small, but this 14th century church is on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list because of its well preserved Christian murals. Also in Sofia visitors will find an assortment of temples, mosques including the Sofia Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe.

Historical Buildings and Monuments in Sofia

As mentioned, Sofia grew because of its mineral waters and one of its historical buildings is the Sofia Public Mineral Baths. Other sites around the city include Knyaz Battenberg’s Palace, the Battenberg Mausoleum, the Amphitheatre of Serdica and several monuments.

Museums of Sofia

As you might expect, Sofia has a good number of museums too, many of which specialise in certain aspects of Sofia’s and Bulgaria’s history. One of the best is the National Museum of History. This comprehensive museum is amongst the largest in the Balkans and features prehistory to the present day.

The National Museum of Natural History is also a good museum, as is the National Archaeological Museum, set in a former Ottoman mosque. Others in Sofia include the Museum of Sport, the National Museum of Military History and the Museum of Paleontology.

Mountains Around Sofia

Just outside Sofia is Vitosha Mountain. During the summer the mountain is great for a day trip to see monasteries and good views, though during the winter they come alive with skiers. Being so close to the city means you can easily take a skiing day trip during the winter, combining the city with the slopes for a unique holiday!

When Should You Visit Sofia?

Obviously if you are interested in skiing come during the winter. Winters are cold, but not stupidly so! Summers are very pleasant in Sofia, and July and August both have average highs of 26C (78F), whilst spring and autumn are mild. Rainfall is fairly steady throughout the year, though June is usually the wettest month.
