Destinations in Croatia
Since its independence from Yugoslavia in 1992 Croatia has really begun to stand on its own as a popular and interesting tourist destination, offering both picturesque coastal scenes and historic cities this makes for a great family holiday destination.
The country’s main international airport is situated in the capital and largest city of Croatia, Zagreb (airport code: ZAG). However, with its northern position within Croatia this is not necessarily the most logical place for tourist flights to land and visitors may prefer to consider flights to the coastal cities of Split or Dubrovnik instead. Flights from the UK to Split (airport code: SPU) are available from London Heathrow with British Airways, though this involves a connecting flight in Rome. Direct flights are offered with Easyjet from London Gatwick to Croatian cities of Split and Dubrovnik (airport code: DBV), or FlyBe offers flights from Exeter, Southampton and Birmingham to Dubrovnik, or Southampton and Birmingham to Split.
The Tourist Attractions of Croatia
Zagreb
Zagreb is the capital and largest city of Croatia, situated in the north of the country. Although the city doesn’t have a coastal appeal it is fast becoming a popular city break destination and a rival to cities like Prague and Budapest.
The medieval old town contains many of the popular tourist areas, though the newer town also has interesting and impressive architecture to wow visitors too. There are a number of good museums in the city and in the evenings a vibrant nightlife.
Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a beautiful city built in the Middle Ages and one of the most beautiful cities on the Aegean/Mediterranean coast. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the Old City of Dubrovnik is Croatia’s major tourist destination and a place where the country’s wealthy hang out. The Old City is completely pedestrianised and is compact enough to cover the whole area by foot.
Visitors who are staying in Dubrovnik can also enjoy the beach and the pleasant summer climate, and a popular getaway is a hike up Mount Srd from which you get excellent views over the city and the ancient harbour.
Split
Split is a coastal town and ancient city though this Croatian city was first developed in the Roman times. Evidence of Roman occupation, including the old city walls as well as Roman squares and temples, can still be seen today. Attractions such as the World Heritage Listed Palace of Diocletian, the city harbour, and the ancient cathedral with its bell tower and city views are the most popular though there are also beaches here for visitors to enjoy too.
Within easy reach of Split is the medieval town of Trogir, one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe which also is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and well worth the day visit.
Other destinations in Croatia
In addition to the above three main tourist destinations, Croatia also offers a range of other attractions too.
The beautiful Plitvice National Park is another of Croatia’s World Heritage Sites. Consisting of 16 interlinked turquoise blue lakes surrounded by lush green forests this is one of Europe’s most outstanding natural sights, and is just one of many of Croatia’s national parks.
When Should You Visit Croatia?
During the summer months Croatia has a pleasant Mediterranean climate on its coast with temperatures in August ranging between 21 and 27C. Winters on the coast are mild compared to the rest of the country though certainly not suitable for enjoying beaches with January averages between 6 and 11C. Inland the climate is more continental and in some parts mountainous – winters here are usually cold and snowy, and summers are mild.
