Flights to Split

Most flights to Split have one connection when coming from the UK, if you choose to fly with a scheduled airline. There are however other options for direct flights to Split – Croatian Airlines flies from both Gatwick and Heathrow, while Easyjet flies from Gatwick and Stansted, and Wizz Air comes from Luton. All of these options are only seasonal. At other times of the year you can get an indirect flight to Split travelling with either Austrian Airlines or British Airways via Vienna, or a flight to Split with Lufthansa will first stop in Frankfurt. You’ll be arriving at the Split Kastela/Resnik Airport (airport code: SPU) which serves both Split and Kastela but is in the town of Trogir. There are coach buses and taxis to take you between the airport and Split.

Split Tourist Attractions

Diocletian's Palace

The remains of emperor Diocletian's Palace are remarkably well preserved even though the buildings were constructed in the 4th century, and it is home to many shops and other buildings within the complex walls. It makes up the centre of the city of Split and you certainly can't miss it. You are free to wander around without any admission costs but you will have to buy a ticket if you want a tour of the basement excavation.

Within the palace boundaries, there are a number of temples, churches and statues offering plenty to see. There are even 2 authentic Egyptian sphinx statues, brought to the site by Diocletian. Guided tours are a good idea if you want to see all the sites within the grounds.

St. Duje's Cathedral

Also known as the Cathedral of St. Dominius (or just the Split Cathedral), it is actually part of the Diocletian Palace compound, and is home to his mausoleum. The distinctive bell tower was added hundreds of years after the original mausoleum was built, in the Romanesque architectural style.

Salona

Salona is another ancient Roman site, just outside Split city centre (about 10 minutes by bus). Salona was a large Roman city that today remains as a number of partially preserved ruins. The site isn't as complete at Diocletian's Palace, and most of the ruins are low sections of walls that mark where buildings and streets once stood. Many impressive columns and arches are still standing.

Ivan Mestrovic Gallery

A wonderful gallery dedicated to the work of Ivan Mestrovic, the Croatian sculptor. The Ivan Mestrovic Gallery in Split is filled with sculpture as well as drawings, furniture and various documents pertaining to the artist's own life. There is a fee for admission, and the gallery is closed on Mondays.

Marjan Hill

Take a hike up Marjan Hill to get some stunning views of Split and the surrounding countryside. There are a number of trails and picnic spots but the city zoo that used to be here is now closed.

When Should You Visit Split?
