Zagreb is Croatia’s capital and largest city. Located in the north west of the country on the Sava River and on the slopes of Medvednica Mountain, Zagreb has a lovely old medieval centre with beautiful architecture, plenty of parks and culture.

Flights to Zagreb

Flights to Zagreb will arrive at the Zagreb International Airport (airport code: ZAG) that is 10 miles away from the downtown centre of the city. There is a regular bus route between the airport and the city through most of the day. There are many options for flights to Zagreb when coming from the UK, with several different airlines. Croatia Airlines and EasyJet both have direct flights to Zagreb from London Gatwick, or there are one stop options with British Midland and Aer Lingus via Munich, or with Lufthansa via Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

Zagreb Tourist Attractions

Despite being the capital of Croatia Zagreb is often overlooked in favour of cities such as Dubrovnik and Split, but if you enjoy visiting medieval preserved cities then Zagreb has a lot to offer.

Zagreb Old Town

The medieval old town of Zagreb is known as the Upper Town and actually consists of two areas that were once separate and often in conflict with each other: Kaptol, and Gradec.

Kaptol was mainly the home for the clergy and as such it houses Zagreb Cathedral, the best known landmark in the whole city. The mainly gothic styled cathedral was started in 1093 but destroyed in 1242. It has suffered an earthquake in 1880 and much of the current architecture dates from the period following, including the two tall spires that can be seen for miles around.

Gradec was home to farmers and merchants and was the larger of the two settlements. Today it is an atmospheric part of Zagreb, featuring narrow streets and broad squares. The main landmark of Gradec is St Mark’s Square which is home to several government buildings and the historic St Mark’s Church that dates from the 13th century.

Museums in Zagreb

Once you’ve seen the sights of Zagreb you can visit its museums. The city has numerous museums dedicated to art and history such as the Archaeological Museum that has exhibits on local archaeology as well as an Egyptian collection with the Zagreb Mummy!

The Croatian Natural History Museum is an interesting visit for any tourists who enjoy natural history and culture as it has prehistoric remains and relics plus an important collection of Neanderthal remains.

In terms of art there are several museums in Zagreb to choose from. The Modern Gallery has an extensive collection of works by 19th and 20th century Croatian artists, or more modern works can be seen at the Museum of Contemporary Art. For something a bit different, Zagreb is home to one of the first museums of its kind in the world, dedicated to naïve art.

When Should You Visit Zagreb?

There’s sunny and warm weather in Zagreb during the summer months, and it doesn’t get too hot for sightseeing with average highs around 26C in July and August. Pack an umbrella or raincoat though as showers are common. Days get darker and somewhat foggy coming into winter and a small amount of snowfall is usually seen from December to March. With the damp weather and cooler temperatures this isn’t a particularly good time to visit Zagreb.
