The island of Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea to the south of Turkey. Long a popular holiday destination, the island suffered a set back when tensions between the Turks and the Greeks resulted in the island being divided between the two. Despite the divide between north and south Cyprus is now a peaceful destination once again, and although the northern half of Cyprus does have popular and attractive destinations it is the southern (Greek Cypriot) half that has the most visitors.

From the UK you can get flights to Cyprus’s northern (Turkish) half though due to regulations all of these flights to Cyprus must first go via Turkey. The southern half is the more popular destination and there are several airports here, though the Larnaca International Airport (airport code: LCA) is the main airport for international flights to Cyprus. From the UK you can choose from either direct or indirect flights. Cyprus Airways and British Airways provide travellers with non-stop flights to Cyprus from the UK. Other airlines such as Olympic Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian, MEA, TAROM, KLM, and Swiss provide one stop flights to Cyprus from the UK.

There are also numerous low cost and charter airlines offering flights to Cyprus. easyJet for example flies to both Larnaca and Paphos airports; Monarch Airlines, Jet2.com, Thomas Cook Airlines, and Thomson Airways all fly to Larnaca also.

Cyprus Tourist Attractions

With its warm Mediterranean climate, numerous beaches, and a collection of interesting attractions on offer, Cyprus has long been a popular holiday destination, especially for the summer. Despite the troubles between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots, Cyprus is just as safe as any other Mediterranean holiday destination and there are talks underway to completely resolve these differences. In the meantime the border control between northern and southern Cyprus has actually been lightened a little, meaning that if you catch a flight to either half you should be allowed entry into the other as well if you want to visit for a day trip.

Cyprus is best known as a beach holiday destination and there are many beaches and resorts where holidaymakers can simply relax and enjoy the sun. A couple of the larger popular beach resorts include Limassol and Paphos, though visitors can also enjoy smaller and quieter resorts here too. Those looking for a vibrant nightlife will probably want to head to the famous resort of Ayia Napa, the major nightlife centre for Cyprus.

Historical Sites in Cyprus

As with many destinations in this part of the world Cyprus has an ancient history to discover. Day trips to numerous sites across the island are usually available for arrangement from hotels and specialist tour operators. Popular sites include the Paphos Archaeological Park where there are remains of large Roman villas. Also in the Paphos area is the Tomb of the Kings.

The city of Kourion, near Limassol, has several important sites, plus in Limassol the medieval castle is a popular attraction.

Nicosia

Nicosia is the capital and also the largest city in Cyprus. When Turkey took control of the northern half of Cyprus the city was divided but with relations between the two halves having improved this is a good and quite easy place to cross the border to the Turkish half. Attractions there include Ataturk Square and the Selimiye Mosque, whilst in the southern part of the city there are many shops, restaurants and museums such as the Byzantine Museum, and the Cyprus Museum.

When Should You Visit Cyprus?

The Mediterranean climate means that Cyprus is a pleasant destination throughout the year though the hottest and driest weather occurs during the summer months of May to September. Winters are warm though rainy.
