Larnaca is one of Cyprus’s major cities and is situated on the east coast of the island. As well as being a popular beach holiday destination Larnaca is an ancient city with attractions, shops, entertainment and restaurants to enjoy.

Prior to 1974 Larnaca airport was relatively small and the main airport for flights to Cyprus was at the capital, Nicosia. When the island was split between north and south Nicosia airport ended up on the Turkish side of the island and has not been used since. Larnaca was quickly developed and became Larnaca International Airport (airport code: LCA) so that it could handle larger aircraft and more passengers. It is now the largest airport on the island and is located less than 4 miles from the city centre.

Flights to Larnaca from the UK are available with a good many airlines, including scheduled, low cost and charter. Scheduled flights to Larnaca can be taken with British Airways and Cyprus Airways, both flying direct, or choose from a variety of airlines offering one stop flights to Larnaca such as Olympic Airlines, KLM and Lufthansa. For a low cost option easyJet, Jet2.com, Monarch Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways all offer flights to Larnaca too.

Larnaca Tourist Attractions

Beaches in Larnaca

The majority of holidaymakers will come to Larnaca to enjoy the city’s great beaches. There are numerous beaches here including Blue Flag awarded Phinikoudes, and McKenzie, but in total there is a coastline of over 15 miles to enjoy.

As well as good quality sand and sea, visitors can usually enjoy an assortment of water sports from the beaches. Larnaca is also popular with divers as there’s a good dive site just off the coast – a wreck of a ferry, the Zenobia, which sunk in 1980.

In the evenings a walk along the seaside promenade, Phinikoudes, is very popular after a great meal in one of the city’s many restaurants.

Historical Sites in Larnaca

Larnaca is an ancient city and although much of the evidence of former occupation has gone there are still some places where you can see evidence of it. The ancient site of Kitium is one such place where you can see ruins. Of newer construction is the Fort of Larnaca, built by the Turks in 1625. There is also the Old Aqueduct that was built in 1745 but was constructed in a Roman style so looks older than it really is!

Larnaca Salt Lake

Just outside the city, on the road to the airport, is Larnaca Salt Lake. This is an important wetland area that fills with water in the winter months. Holidaymakers coming to Larnaca during the winter are treated to a large flock of migratory flamingos who are here from November to March, in addition to many other species of birds.

When Should You Visit Larnaca?

Larnaca’s location in the Mediterranean means the city enjoys a mild climate year round. Summers are the most popular time to visit and there is hot weather from May through to September. Winters are relatively mild but this is the rainy season in Larnaca, and hence less popular. However, it is a great time to visit the city’s sites of interest and to come to enjoy the migrating birds.
