Paphos is a town on the south western coast of Cyprus and it’s one of the top tourist destinations for the island. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Paphos offers a great deal of ancient history, combined with some wonderful beaches and hot, sunny weather.

About 6 miles outside the city, is the Paphos International Airport (airport code: PFO) which is the second largest airport in Cyprus. It’s been newly renovated and handles nearly 2 million passengers a year. From the UK there are options for both scheduled and charter airline flights to Paphos, depending on your budget and your agenda. Monarch, Strategic Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, Tor Air and EasyJet also all have flights to Paphos from Gatwick, while other UK airports are served by Jet2, Sky Wings and some of the other aforementioned airlines.

Paphos Tourist Attractions

The Tombs of the Kings

Paphos, and Cyprus as a whole, has plenty of ancient history to discover, and just a mile outside of Paphos is one such site. The Tombs of the Kings is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and though there may not be any kings buried here the place was reserved for aristocrats and high officials, buried within the network of underground tunnels.

Petra Tou Romiou

You may not have heard of the Greek name for this local landmark, but you will no doubt have heard of the English name! Petra Tou Romiou means Rock of the Greek, or Aphrodite’s Rock and it is said to be the birthplace of the Goddess Aphrodite. She is known as the goddess of love, and legend has it that if you swim around the rock you will be blessed with eternal beauty. Though this sounds appealing, it’s not recommended as the sea here is quite rough and dangerous!

Paphos Castle

In the centre of the city the most obvious landmark is Paphos Castle. Built on the site of an original Byzantine fort, this version of Paphos Castle dates from the Ottoman period, and was constructed in 1586. The castle is a popular attraction that’s open to the public during the summer for a minimal entrance fee.

Paphos Odeon

Another ancient site, and one that is very well preserved is Paphos Odeon. The Odeon is an amphitheatre that is in use today for plays and performances, much as it would have been when first constructed in ancient times.

Paphos Aphrodite Water Park

Tourists visiting with children, or adults who enjoy fun in the water, will want to visit Paphos’ Aphrodite Water Park. There are no promises of eternal beauty here, but the water park has lots of fun things to do including slides, a lazy river and wave machines. Of course if this doesn’t appeal you can simply make use of all the lovely beaches in and around the Paphos area.

When Should You Visit Paphos?

Paphos has a true Mediterranean climate where although the winters are mild, this is definitely the ‘off’ season. Summers bring many thousands of tourists, wanting to enjoy the sunny and hot weather. August is usually the hottest month when average highs are around 30C. Autumn is a pleasant and quieter time to visit, but get here before November if you want to avoid the start of the rainy season.
