Ostrava Tourist Attractions
Silesian Ostrava Castle
The major tourist attraction of Ostrava is the Silesian Ostrava Castle. It’s a major landmark and important in the city’s history and culture, and following extensive renovations visitors can now tour parts of the castle. Originally Ostrava Castle dates from the 1300s, but what you see here today was built in the 1800s.
Museum of Mining
Ostrava’s Museum of Mining gives visitors an insight into the industry that helped to shape Ostrava as a city. You’ll see a large collection of machinery and equipment that was used to mine coal from the local mines plus visitors have the chance to travel down into a mine shaft to see what it’s like underground. There’s an underground tunnel that spans 250 metres that you can explore. For something a little different the Museum of mining has a reconstructed hunter’s village from which villagers used to hunt mammoths!
Ostrava New City Hall
Another major landmark is Ostrava New City Hall. By today’s standards this building isn’t ‘new’ anymore because it was constructed between 1925 and 1930! Even so it’s a popular tourist attraction, especially for the public viewing platform within the central tower. The tower makes this the largest town hall in the Czech Republic and at 72 metres high it offers great views over Ostrava.
Stodolni Street
Visitors who want to enjoy some of Ostrava’s nightlife will no doubt head to Stodolni Street. Rather than being just one street, as the name suggests, this is a collection of several streets where most of Ostrava’s nightlife is concentrated. It’s said to have the largest number of strip bars and pubs in the Czech Republic, and there’s usually music playing for all tastes to enjoy. During the summer the area comes alive with the Colours of Ostrava festival; a music festival that’s popular with both locals and visitors.
When Should You Visit Ostrava?
For sightseeing Ostrava is best visited during the summer months as temperatures are warm and pleasant at this time. Between May and September average high temperatures range between 19 and 25C, so it’s not usually too hot or too cold. In between summer and winter the seasons of spring and autumn are quite short, whereas winter is long lasting. Temperatures drop, but like summer it’s temperate here so never gets really cold.
