Prague Tourist Attractions

Being the top destination in the Czech Republic, Prague is full of historic buildings, monuments and museums and offers a fascinating look at the culture and history of this city and country.

The Old Town

The historic centre of Prague is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes attractions such as the Old Town Square. This large square is surrounded by the most beautiful architecture and is a lovely place to spend some time in the summer months, enjoying a drink in a café and watching the world go by. On the square is the Old Town Hall from where you can enjoy views over the square. The Astronomical Clock is the other big attraction on the Old Town Square. This is actually mounted on the southern wall of the Old Town Hall and rather than being a standard clock it is an astronomical clock which displays the sun and the moon positions, a calendar, and the time.

The Lesser Quarter of the Old Town is joined to the rest via Charles Bridge, a famous historical bridge that crosses the Vltava River. The Lesser Quarter is no less interesting for a tourist because it is here that you’ll find Prague Castle, one of largest ancient castle in the world (according to Guinness!). This huge castle has plenty of parts to see including palaces, gardens, halls and churches.

The New Town

With a name like the New Town many visitors would expect this part of Prague to be the modern heart of the city though in fact this was built as an extension to the Old Town way back in the 14th century!

The major attraction in the New Town is Wenceslas Square. A former Horse Market, the square is now full of tourists on a daily basis rather than horses! Here you’ll find the National Museum, and the statue of Wenceslas, along with numerous other important buildings lining the square.

Other Attractions in Prague

There are dozens more interesting attractions in Prague that tourists can visit if they have a little more time to spend in the city. Amongst the highlights is the bizarre Dancing House. This unique building was completed in 1996 and features a French restaurant on its rooftop with excellent views.

Prague Zoo is another top attraction and voted within the ten best museums in the world. It features 630 different species from around the world and a total of 4,600 animals.

When Should You Visit Prague?

There’s no doubt that Prague is most popular during the summer when you can expect warm to hot temperatures, though rainfall is a possibility. To avoid some of the crowds, spring and autumn can be good times to visit when temperatures are mild to cool. Winter’s can be quite chilly and are known for being cloudy.
