Aalborg Tourist Attractions
Aalborg is wonderful little city that’s full of charm and appeal, with picture perfect quaint streets and traditional Danish buildings, this really is a lovely place to come for a visit.
Aalborg Historic Homes
There are modern parts to Aalborg too, but it’s along quaint streets you’ll find some of Aalborg’s charming historic homes that are very popular attractions. The more traditional and basic homes dating from the 17th century are in abundance and they’re recognisable by their soft pastel wall colours and the fact that they stand one and a half storeys high.
Jens Bang’s House is a far more grand example of Danish architecture. It also dates from the 17th century but stands an impressive five storeys high. It has renaissance style architecture and was built for a wealthy merchant named Jens Bang.
Aalborghus Castle
While the historic homes are beautiful, probably the best known landmark of Aalborg is the castle. It’s quite different to what most visitors would imagine when they think of a castle as this one looks more like a grand home than a castle. It was built between 1539 and 1555 as a fortified castle by King Christian III, but became the seat of governors soon afterwards.
Aalborg Historical Museum
The history and culture of Aalborg and the surrounding region can be explored in greater detail at the Aalborg Historical Museum. This museum focuses on the history and culture going back 1000 years.
Aalborg Zoo
Aalborg Zoo is one of the largest in Denmark and makes a great change from the history if you’re visiting the city with children. The zoo is right near the centre of town, so easy to get to, and has around 1200 animals from 138 different species.
KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art
Back to the museums and another popular one in Aalborg is the KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art. The building is considered by some to be a work of art itself, as it was designed specifically to be the home of this gallery. Built between 1968 and 1972 one of the main features is the carrara marble. There’s around 1500 works of art on display and outside you can visit the sculpture garden.
When Should You Visit Aalborg?
Summers are definitely the most popular time to visit Aalborg as you’ll get warm weather with an average high of around 20C in July and August. The rest of the year temperatures are cooler, and by winter it’s a little on the cold side for sightseeing with an average high of just 2C in January.
