Aarhus Tourist Attractions

Aarhus Old Town

Aarhus is a charming, historic city with its share of old and interesting buildings, though funnily enough, not all in the Old Town! The Old Town is actually a collection of buildings that have been brought here from all over Denmark. Some date as far back as the 1550’s and there are many lovely half timbered buildings featured here. A lot of the buildings are open for visitors to wander in and out and they are furnished with period pieces, plus there are costumed staff walking around. Aarhus Old Town is the most popular attraction of the city, and in fact one of the most popular in Denmark.

Aarhus City Hall

The second City Hall of Aarhus is a historic building that now serves as the Kvindemuseet, one of Aarhus’ museums, while the first City Hall was demolished in 1859. The new City Hall is a totally different piece of architecture, built in the early 1940s. The clock tower is one of the city’s main landmarks, standing 60 metres high.

Aarhus Botanical Gardens

Not far from the Old Town are the Botanical Gardens of Aarhus where you can see several thousand plant and tree species and make the most of the children’s playground if you’ve visiting Aarhus with little ones.

Museums in Aarhus

You could call the Old Town itself a living museum, plus there are several others to visit while in Aarhus. The Kvindemuseet in the old town hall is called in English the Women’s Museum in Denmark and it’s focused in feminism. You can also visit one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe, called ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum. It features a permanent exhibition on contemporary art as well as the golden age of Danish art, and Danish modernism.

If you’re interested in the Vikings a popular museum in Aarhus is the Viking Museum, built over an archaeological excavation where numerous pieces from the Viking Age were found. The Moesgard Museum in a suburb of Aarhus has a strong connection with the Viking Museum.

Tivoli Friheden Theme Park

If you want a change from the sightseeing you can take the family for a day trip to the theme park, Tivoli Friheden. It’s been open since 1903 and is just a couple of miles from the city centre. There are over 40 attractions here for the whole family.

When Should You Visit Aarhus?

Between June and September you’ll get warm temperatures in Aarhus, making this a nice time to visit. There’s rainfall across the year though so bring a jacket. In the winter it doesn’t get too cold, but with the damp weather it’s not a great time for sighteeing.
