Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark in Scandinavia, Northern Europe. Situated on one of the country’s largest islands, Zealand, Copenhagen is a popular tourist destination with its range of attractions.
Indre By
The historical centre of Copenhagen is Indre By, the downtown area where many of the city’s tourists head to. As both the centre and the historical centre of the city there are many attractions here, in addition to accommodation, restaurants, nightlife and shops, so really many tourists never leave this part of the city. Beautiful architecture, museums, and gardens are amongst the attractions here.
City Hall
The City Hall is situated on Radhuspladsen, one of the city’s squares, and is open to the public for viewing with or without a guide. From the outside the building is attractive, and inside where you can stroll through the corridors almost entirely unchecked, you can enjoy the various works or art that line the walls.
The Marble Church
One of the city’s major landmarks is the Marble Church, the lower parts of which were built with Norwegian marble. The large dome measures 31 metres across. Entrance to the church is free but you can join a once a day tour for a fee and go to the top of the church for great views of the city.
Christiansborg
Christiansborg is the home of the Parliament of Denmark. This is an impressive neo Baroque palace that was completed in 1928 and was built on top of castle ruins that date back to the 12th century. Excavations of the castle were made during construction of the palace and these are open to the public as are some areas of Parliament.
Tivoli
The gardens and amusements of Tivoli are one of the top attractions in Copenhagen. Originally the gardens were constructed in 1843 and were just outside the city walls. As the city grew, the gardens remained, becoming the oasis within the busy city that they are today. The gardens and lake are beautiful and a great place to come day or night, plus there are fun amusements here including roller coasters, Ferris wheels, children’s rides and more. There’s definitely something here for all ages.
Copenhagen Museums
Copenhagen is big on museums with many excellent offerings in the city centre and outside. Ny Carlsberg Glypotek is one of the top museums, housing over 10,000 works of art and sculptures from the likes of Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, and Degas. Rosenborg Castle treats visitors both to the castle and the cultural history museum, whilst the National Museum concentrates on the history of Denmark and is considered one of the best in Europe.

Copenhagen International Airport (airport code: CPH) is the busiest airport in Denmark and serves as a hub for the rest of Scandinavia too. This means there are a great many airlines offering flights to Copenhagen from the UK.
