Estonia Tourist Attractions
Estonia has a great deal to offer visitors to this beautiful country – scenery, forests, and national parks are plentiful, plus there are many delightful little towns and villages to enjoy too. Amongst the must-see places in Estonia are the following:
Tallinn
Many visitors start a holiday in Estonia in the capital city, Tallinn. This is also the country’s largest city and has a well preserved old city that’s listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. Wander the cobbled streets of the old city that was built between the 15th and 17th centuries. There are many lovely buildings to see, but the major sites include the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the town hall, Raekoda, that was built back in 1371, and a Danish castle dating back to 1219 when Tallinn was first founded.
The newer city has lots to see too, so factor in a day or so for this part of the city as well. The Tallinn TV Tower is a favourite attraction because of the great views it gives visitors from its observation deck over the city and the landscapes beyond. Other attractions include Kadriorg Palace, the Holy Birgitta Monastery, and the nearby Jagala Falls.
Other Towns in Estonia
Tallinn is just one beautiful city amongst many in Estonia. Other fine examples include the second largest city, Tartu. This is also a very old city and has a historic heart with many impressive buildings, bridges, and more.
Visitors who enjoy castles will find many in Estonia – one example is Rakvere Castle that was completed in the first half of the 16th century.
Estonia’s Baltic Islands
As well as the mainland of Estonia there are around 1,500 islands in the Baltic Sea. Touring around numerous islands would make a great holiday in itself, or if you want to visit just a few the two main ones are Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.
National Parks of Estonia
Being such a beautiful country it’s no surprise that Estonia wants to keep it this way. There are five national parks in the country, each offering something different. Try something you probably wouldn’t usually do and swim in the peat bogs of Soomaa National Park. This park is easily accessible from Tallinn, as is Lahemaa National Park.
When Should You Visit Estonia?
Estonia is not renowned for its hot weather, so if you’re looking for somewhere to catch a sun tan this probably isn’t it! Summers are mild and perfectly pleasant for walking around and sightseeing. Winters can get cold, especially in February, the coldest month of the year when the average temperature is only -5.7C!
