Helsinki Tourist Attractions
Helsinki is enjoyed by many visitors during the summer when you can make the most of warm days by touring the city on foot or on bicycle, or by using some of Helsinki’s excellent public transport. The city is most alive during the summer as locals and visitors alike love sitting outdoors at cafés and bars, watching the world go by, or strolling down by the port, watching the boats come and go. Helsinki really is a lovely city and a pleasure to spend time in. Some of the highlights of a visit to Helsinki include the following:
Helsinki’s Islands
Helsinki is made up of numerous islands so there are many different parts to the city to visit. Some islands have their own unique attractions such as Soumenlinna. This is home to what was once a great sea fortress that was built in the 1700’s by the Swedish. Today parts of the fortress still exist but when you visit this island you’ll find more than just a fortress – there are some excellent restaurants and cafés plus museums and shops.
The island of Korkeasaari is right in central Helsinki and is home to the Helsinki Zoo, one of the city’s most popular attractions. There are around 200 species of animals living here and with quite a low admission fee it’s a good place to visit.
Lutheran Cathedral
When Helsinki was taken over by the Russians much of the architecture that still remains today was built, giving the city a very Russian feel in places. The Lutheran Cathedral is one such building and this has become the unofficial symbol of Helsinki. This large white building has green domes and was completed in 1852.
You may also like to visit the Uspenski Cathedral; a classical ‘onion’ domed Russian Orthodox church, or for something completely different there’s the Church in the Rock which was built in 1969.
Helsinki’s Museums
Museum lovers will enjoy Helsinki’s numerous museums, including the National Museum of Finland which has exhibits concentrating on the history of the country. For a more local history visit the interesting Helsinki City Museum or if art is your thing there’s the Ateneum Art Museum or the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Olympic Tower
Another of Helsinki’s most popular attractions is the Olympic Tower. This tall tower was built as part of the complex for the 1952 Summer Olympics and gives great views over the city.
When Should You Visit Helsinki?
Summer is definitely the best time to visit Helsinki not only for the warmer weather but because some of the city’s attractions are only open in the summer. The warmest month is July when the average high is 21C (70F), though daily high temperatures can often exceed this average. Summer is unfortunately the wetter season, but during the winter precipitation falls as snow and temperatures can be quite cold.
