Finland Tourist Attractions

Finland is a country that should attract visitors of many different tastes as it has so much to offer. Its cities are vibrant and cosmopolitan yet many retain a charming historical appeal too; then there’s the scenery – miles upon miles of untouched wilderness, lakes and forests where you can enjoy many different outdoor pursuits. Here are a few of the highlights of a visit to Finland.

Helsinki

The capital and the largest city in Finland is Helsinki, situated in the south of the country on the Gulf of Finland. The waterside setting is very attractive, as are many parts of the city’s architecture, and this city will appeal to both young and old. For the young there’s a vibrant scene that includes bars, clubs, shopping, entertainment and more, or for those who prefer a quieter visit there are museums, impressive buildings and restaurants to try.

Some of the city’s top attractions include the National Museum of Finland, the Helsinki City Museum, the Lutheran Cathedral, the Sibelius Monument, Parliament House, and the Olympic Stadium and Tower.

Finnish Lapland

To the north of Helsinki you’ll enter the region known as Lapland. Popular with those seeking out Santa Claus, this part of the country includes some stunning scenery and the chance to visit Santa Claus Village. This mainly tourist oriented attraction is usually a hit with the children who can meet Santa Claus in person, plus you can send postcards and other mail from the post office here and get an authentic Santa postmark on it!

Above the Arctic Circle

Only a little way north of Santa Claus Village you’ll cross over the Arctic Circle. During the summer this means you’ll have very long days especially from June to July when you’ll see the Midnight Sun. The sun never fully sets at this time. In contrast if you venture up here during the winter you’ll have extremely short days including some when the sun doesn’t even rise, but this gives great opportunities for seeing the Northern Lights.

Finland’s National Parks

With so much amazing scenery to protect, Finland has numerous national parks that visitors can enjoy. Wherever you’re staying in Finland there’s likely to be a national park quite nearby. If you’re staying in Helsinki visit the Nuuksio National Park for example.

When Should You Visit Finland?

There are advantages to visiting Finland at any time of the year so it really depends on what sort of holiday you’re looking for. The south of the country is warmer than further north and has pleasant summers, and while the north is warm during the summer months you’ll want to try to avoid the Lappish Mosquito in Lapland as these huge mosquitoes are a huge nuisance! Winters are cold, especially in the north, but there are some great places for skiing if that’s your thing.
