Cannes Tourist Attractions
The Cannes Film Festival
This is what Cannes is best known for these days and although it’s known as one of the top showbiz events of the year it’s not actually open to the general public. By all means do visit Cannes during the Film Festival but you won’t get into any of the red carpet events without a personal invitation. This can be still a good time to come as there are public screenings of movies on the beach and there’s generally a fun and lively atmosphere around the town.
La Criosette
The avenue that lines the seafront is called La Croisette and it’s lined with palm trees that give this part of town a real Mediterranean feel. There are many of Cannes’ best hotels on this street and they enjoy fabulous Med sea views, plus there are some lovely restaurants and cafés to enjoy too. Right by the sea there are beaches, where you can lie back and relax.
Villas in Cannes
One feature that Cannes is quite well known for is its villas. These large houses were mostly built in the 1880s for the aristocracy that used to holiday here back in Victorian times. They can be quite unique in style, and most of them are really quite beautiful. As you might expect the majority are still privately owned so you can’t see inside, but you can take a stroll along these streets and the exteriors.
St Marguerite Island
A little way off the coast of Cannes is St Marguerite Island which is home to a historic fort. It was here that the Man in the Iron Mask was held captive for 11 years during the 17th century. Today you can take a boat trip from Cannes to the island and visit the cell where he was held, and find out more about the history and what went on here at the Museum of the Sea, now housed within the old fort. The museum also has exhibits showing artefacts that have been raised from Roman and Saracen shipwrecks.
When Should You Visit Cannes?
Cannes has a typical Mediterranean climate so it’s mild to warm all year round. Winters are quieter as it’s the off season, but you’ll still enjoy mild temperatures though some rainfall. Most tourists visit Cannes in the summer months when, between May and September, average high temperatures are between 20 and 27C and there’s little rainfall.
